Yeah, I sent an email to TWC a month ago asking them if they were planning on adding any more HD channels since we are getting the shaft. Their response, "we are not planning on adding any HD channels at this time". BS

okay i was thinking about switching to DirectTV. For people that has switch from TWC (raleigh) or have it- what do you think? Do you have any problems? What package do you have? Do they have as many hidden costs as TWC?

And then what internet service do you use if you have DirectTV?

Unless something has changed in the two weeks since I've cancelled TWC, you don't get _any_ of those channels in Raleigh. MHD is not MTV HD, Discovery HD Theater is not Discovery HD, and History HD definitely isn't available.

and I did not realize that MHD != MTV HD or that discovery HD != discovery hd theatre.

I could give two shits and a fuck about mtv hd though. I'd consider paying extra not to have it available.

MHD isn't MTVHD, but it is a combination of content from MTV, VH1, and CMT.

Dish has all of those except mtvhd and lifetime hd (didn't know that exists)

Oh...We got USA HD for the olympics, but as soon as the olympics ended TWC took it away. Which doesn't make any damn sense.

Oh HD lineup makes no sense. We get shit like TBS and TNT in HD that has almost NO original content.
Yet we don't get discovery(HD theatre doesnt count), USA,etc that actually provide HD content.

If its a matter of bandwidth or w/e they should get rid of TBS in HD and replace it with any other HD channel.

Apparently the clowns from universal are as dumb as TWC.

I don't pay the $10 a month for the 3 additional HD channels, but recently they changed it so everyone gets UHD(universal HD).

I think universal is messing with me. Keep in mind this is an HD only channel. There is no SD counterpart, yet they insist on showing movies that were made before 1990?

I know its cheap to show old movies and show them over and over. But whats the point in making a HD only channel, then show shitty upconverts?

^you realize "HD" has nothing to do with when the movie was filmed? Movies before the 90s will look just as good as movies after the 90s. Either way they digitally scan 35mm film. I have a beautiful copy of Casablanca (1942) in 1080p (4:3 though) on bluray. They simply scanned in the 35mm film and converted it to digital.

Now upconverting is a different story. Some networks upconvert dvds to 1080i to be broadcast and this isn't as good as a digital scan (method they use to convert film movies to bluray) because the original source is still a DVD.

There's only a handfull of major movies that were actually filmed digitally. 35mm film is still the standard for filming movies because right now it's better quality than a 1080p digital camera can film (able to get more lines of resolution from a 35mm scan than 1080).

Now as far as which one the networks use (upconverted dvd or digital scan) i don't know. If the movie is already out on bluray/hddvd then it's likely to be that, but if it isn't out on either format then it could be an upconvert from a dvd or it could be a true digital 1080p scan. I don't really know how that works.

Unfortunately any 1080p scan would have to be converted to a 1080i or 720p signal anyways since, as far as the TWC website says, they don't offer signals at 1080p. Depending on the lazyness of the the network, that could undue the most loving scan of a well preserved film.

Purely based on what I've seen...the quality of movies made after 2000 are much better than movies made before 1990.
I'm speaking of what is shown on television. Obviously if a movie from 1956 is released on bluray special edition its going to be good quality.

Networks don't seem to give a shit about taking the time to get the best quality version of Ferris Bueller's Day Off though.

You're basing your judgement off of what versions of those movies you've seen. You might have simply seen upconverted movies before the 90's (from dvd) and actual blurays from after 2000. You can't compare them like that. There's plenty of poor quality movies after 2000, and plenty of great looking movies before the 90's. Plus quality is a very relative term.

-Ok let me rephrase, so you're saying:

"The quality of upconverted dvds from before the 90's is worse than the quality of blurays from after 2000"

Well that's obvious. On the other hand if you compare the same lines of resolution from two different films, then the one made after 2000 isn't always going to be better quality than ones before the 90's.

Actually, to be fair, they are showing Seinfeld in true HD now. Yes, seriously.

Whats available on HD-DVD/Bluray has absolutely nothing to do with what you are seeing on TV. Its not like the guys at HBO are saying "Ok, so we are premiering Michael Clayton this weekend...Billy, can you run down to Wal-mart and pick up the Bluray of that?" The have their own masters in whatever format they broadcast in. The BD is always going to look better than broadcast, since its not being compressed by the network and then recompressed by the cable/sat provider. The quality of older films vs new involves a number of factors...film grain, the original source of the transfer, was it zoomed and cropped to fill the screen, etc. With a proper restoration, the age of a film is going to be pretty much neglible (look at Citizen Kane on DVD).

If youre going to bitch about UHD, bitch where its deserved...their decision to add commercials during movies and a big ass bug.
