i've got a dell quad core as my desktop, but server 2008 isn't for me.

vista 64 is my thing.

Server 2008 sucks for a desktop OS. I did that for a couple months while testing our next software releases for Server 2008 and Exchange 2007. I'm very happy to be back with XP Pro.

i used it as a desktop, and my creative audio sucked due to it being digital out. everything else worked great and i wish it had better drivers for audio/video from creative/nvidia

ok lets be technical!!1

Quote :
"I'm very happy to be back with XP Pro."

over the weekend i did the sp3 cd slipstream with the xp pro install cd and put it on my "old" personal desktop that i'm using while my laptop is having some abused hardware replaced used sp3 and pretty much all the security center shit through last weekend

just to see how that would run from scratch, without installing the OS then doing the 10000 minor hotpacks from windows update..

and i'm really surprised at how fast its running compared to sp2, im basically ignorant on if it was that, or the amount of useless drivers and services i pulled out of the install cd, but i'm gonna actually keep the desktop in use now, even after i get my main pc back.

but not as any kind of homemade dvr system, or i'd use TEH LUNIX!11

^any reason in particular you'd use 2k3 or r2? most people seem to like 2k8/6.0 or 2000 for desktops if they're playing with that kind of setup. im curious, kind of unfamiliar with what happened to 2003 and r2

or am i repeating your question back to you?

there are major differences between 2003/xp and 2008/vista, however.

2008 and vista have the *exact same* kernel... the difference is merely software packages. it was a bit different in xp/2003.

2008 server + the "desktop experience" feature = vista minus the bloatware

this actually did the internet rounds in March.... just found this link in my bookmarks, supposedly it's 10% faster on average:
http://exo-blog.blogspot.com/2008/03/windows-2008-vista-done-right.html

but the benchmarks are kind of weak to support this across the board.

2003 is a great work desktop OS. 2008, I would guess not.
