How could you cut the Smash? I forget, did he end up getting scholarship or what?

Kind of have to cut Smash, since he presumptively has graduated and heading to college to play ball.

^^ He decided to go to the local, smaller school with the caring coach after his scholarship to some big college got rescinded.

From TVGuide.com

Quote :
"We're all grateful that, through whatever corporate machinations that occurred between NBC and DirecTV, there will be a third season of Friday Night Lights this fall. But how exactly is that going to work?

Here's the deal straight from Sunday's FNL panel: Thirteen new episodes of FNL will air on DirecTV starting in October, on a channel called The 101. Then, the same 13 episodes will be shown on NBC beginning in February 2009. So, essentially, if you don't have DirecTV, there is the potential for some serious spoilers. "Just download it [illegally]," suggested cast member Zach Gilford, much to the chagrin of the NBC and DirecTV handlers in the house. "But then it would be in good conscience to watch it on NBC when it airs there," he added. Helpful!

DirecTV promotional materials indicate that the two versions may actually differ slightly, although executive producer Jason Katims said they haven't quite established how just yet.

Katims said that "senior year" would be a recurring theme of Season 3, which fast-forwards eight months from last season's finale. Hence the recent announcement that Jason Street (Scott Porter) and Smash Williams (Gaius Charles) — whose characters would have graduated in the intervening months — would not be returning as series regulars. Porter and Charles will, however, appear in four episodes that will explain their exits. Katims also said he will definitely leave the door open for the possibility of Street and/or Smash to reappear.

Minka Kelly announced that "Lyla's done with her 'born-again' phase, and her relationship with Riggins is now out in the open." "I didn't even hear that," said Taylor Kitsch, who plays Riggins. "I'm interested to see how it plays out." Aren't we all? — Mickey O'Connor"

love FNL. Its only because the writing/storylines/acting is so good that it went past 1 season. Certainly not viewership/ratings. Guess we'll get to enjoy what is most likely the last season.

"NBC and DirecTV just hosted a little luncheon with the cast of TV's best drama series, Friday Night Lights, and as entertaining as it was, it was nothing compared to dessert: Shortly after the press conference, exec producer Jason Katims got into a huddle with a few select journalists and basically outlined his plans for the entire third season. Warning: Major, life-altering spoilers are below!

* If you're having a tough time coping with the impending loss of Gaius Charles' Smash and Scott Porter's Jason, wait until next year: Katims reveals that Tim (Taylor Kitsch), Matt (Zach Gilford), Tyra (Adrianne Palicki) and Lyla (Minka Kelly) are all entering their senior years this season. The knowledge that this may be their final year in Dillon will "add an urgency to [their] stories, but also a nostalgia." "It will be sad to leave," says Palicki, "but I think we were all kind of prepared for that on some level."

* When the new season starts, eight months will have passed since the Season 2 finale, placing the action at the start of a new school year. Among the major developments: Tim and Lyla are now in a serious relationship. "We think it'll be a tremendously fun storyline, which could ultimately become very moving," Katims says. "It's one thing to have this passionate, secret relationship, but once they're in a real relationship, they see how different they are. They're completely an odd couple... Also, they're both seniors now, so it's really a question of, Where are they going now? Where are they headed? Lyla really tries to get Tim to be the best version of himself. (She wants him to) get into college, get a scholarship... But the question is whether these two are destined to have very different lives."

* The hiatus has not been nearly as kind to another Dillon super-couple: Tyra and Landry. "Tyra in the past eight months has [realized] that, while she loves Landry, she kind of feels like he's not really The Guy," says Katims. "So it becomes a story about, Are they going to be able to be friends? And will Landry be able to accept that?" Probably not when he meets the new Guy in her life, but more on that below.

* Matt and Julie will try and put the past behind them and become friends.

* As previously reported, Tami will be appointed the principal of Dillon High. "From the beginning, we wanted to find ways to get (Connie Britton) driving story as much as possible, and not just be the coach's wife," says Katims, adding that the new gig will lead to some serious tension at home. "Suddenly she (and Coach Taylor) may find (themselves) on opposite sides of some issues."

* Katims concedes that it was not easy placing the calls to Charles and Porter informing them that their runs on the show were coming to an end. "It was very hard to break the news to them," he admits. Smash and Jason, however, will be going out with "two of the most powerful storylines" this season. "We are not doing this in any unceremonious way. And, also, we want to very much leave the door open for both of them to come back to the show."

* A handful of new characters will be introduced, including a freshman named J.D. McCoy. "He's a phenomenal quarterback," Katims explains. "In the first arc of the season, there's a controversy over who will be the first-string quarterback for the Panthers." Additionally, an old friend of Billy Riggins' will make a play for Tyra. "He's a local rodeo star, so he's right in Tyra's wheelhouse. So Landry is not going to be (happy)."

* Matt Czuchry (Chris) and Benny Ciaramello (Santiago) will not be back.

* A renewed focus will be placed on the Landry/Matt friendship, a relationship Katims says got sidelined last season in the wake of the Landry/Tyra murder plot. "With that intense, secret thing between Landry and Tyra, we lost a little bit of Landry as Matt's buddy/sidekick/friend, and we're going to have that back."

Tim and Lyla in a serious relationship? Landry and Tyra dunzo? Tami the boss of Dillon High? An end in sight for four more characters? Surely, you guys have some thoughts about all this, right?

(For more on what's in Katims' playbook for Season 3, check out Dan Snierson's exclusive interview in Hollywood Insider.)

Great first episode of the season. Here's the link if you don't have DirectTV and don't want to wait till it premieres on NBC...

thanks a lot for that link. what a great show. still don't know if i'm going to watch that or just wait till it comes on nbc in a few months. but it's good to have an option

i really hope that people start watching this show when NBC runs it this season. and i hope they advertise the shit out of it. it's too good of a show to be canceled for lack of ratings

^^Thanks for the link.

I had convinced myself that I was going to wait till it came on NBC even if I found a link. But, of course, I went and watched it online yesterday.

Great episode!

Hulu and NBC both just keep the past five episodes so neither has the first two episodes. Only way to get them right now is to visit a torrent site. And this season has been phenomenal. The Smash storyline might be the highlight of the entire series.

The Smash storyline was neat but seemed rushed. The series has taken a massive downturn since season one, in my opinion.

I'm glad they're finally writing off Street, though. That actor annoys me to no end.

why would nbc not have the 1st 2 episodes when they have all of seasons 1 and 2?

\/ Yeah, I saw what he posted but it doesn't answer the question. My question was why they would only have the lastest 5 episodes of the current season, but all 22 episodes from season 1 and all 15 from season 2

I don't understand why someone would wait all this time for NBC to start showing the episodes and then watch them online.

If you're gonna do that, why not just download them all and be done with it?

I saw the season finale tonight. I didn't want to watch it online and would rather wait to watch it on the 46 inch HDTV instead. Great show. I wonder if they'll have a 4th season. They kind of left the finale open for Coach Taylor to get revenge on his former team by coaching at East Dillon.

i'm curious to see who will be back next season and who will be gone. i always thought landry and seracen were the same age but i dont think landry graduated. sadly i think lyla is probably gone and i really dont want to see riggins go. i got annoyed with tyra much like i was annoyed with street so i'm ok with her not coming back. its set up for a new cast of students to come in... wonder what will happen.

Just watched the season finale on DVR (how I've watched every show this season) and my wife is currently watching it. Hell she was a bit upset that I didn't wait to watch it with her! But wow what a season finale. I can't believe that they dropped coach in East Dillon. I'm glad that most are going to college, but what is with Matt? I guess he'll be hanging around next season.

We will get a decent crop of new characters with the switch to East Dillon and a couple of episodes regarding the rivalry with Dillon. The big question is which school will Buddy follow?
