If I don't shave for a long time and then decide to do some yard work, I end up with some righteous razor burn. My suitemate in college recommended using Neosporin to shave the stubble instead of shaving cream. It's a little wasteful (ruins the razor and a tube of neosporin in a hurry), but it works!

lots of shaving cream.

First, direction of the hair growth. then about 45 degrees, then perpendicular.

Seems like a lot of work, but you only have to do it when you let it get too long and it works. Good razor makes a big difference too. Get a new one out, don't use a dull one.
