I'm getting fucked by my grad school on housing
should I:
1) Try to find my own place and end up spending lots of monies on a tiny apartment in Manhattan.
2) Live in a community center in Brooklyn with two of my friends and have to commute an hour to work/school every day by train. I'd save some money buy live in the ghetto far away. Also, this would alienate my girlfriend further.
3) Move to Columbus, Ohio with my girlfriend while she attends medical school, thus saving my relationship and lots and lots of money. I would do graduate school online and try to get hands-on work in media locally (perhaps at OSU's TV station or one of their two radio stations).
Please vote. After all, my life is in your hands. 7/15/2008 8:41:34 PM |

Only move if you love your girlfriend
I mean love love
Because there's a million girls out there
but you only get shot at your 20's
Don't fuck it up

I have a job in NYC that I don't quite love and it isn't paying me gobs of money, but I'm employed.
I suppose at a later point I could move out here for just a semester or summer or something for an internship and to interact with people at my school. I really do want to take courses face to face at the school because it is an excellent school.
But I love my girlfriend and she is very hurt that I chose to move away from her without coming to some consensus with her. She feels that I was breaking up with her by doing so.
Also, I'm afraid of the expense that I'll be incurring here. 7/15/2008 8:47:17 PM |

i would say its foolish to alienate this girl if you really want to be with her....3
also, how much do you enjoy NYC? would you rather live in Ohio? personally I want to live as many places as possible. and don't go 3, to save the relationship. it is your life.

i changed my answer. i think you should do 1, 2. or whatever will make you happiest
but when i read about needing to move to ohio to "save" your relationship AND that your gf is going to be in grad school, i had a few thoughts
1. "saving" your relationship isn't really that good of a reason to move 2. graduate school really really takes a toll on relationships even if you ARE living in close proximity (would you be living with her?? this might make it even crazier). i mean your relationship could already be strained by grad school like moving might not necessarily "save" it. it might even complicate things
i don't know. tough choice. c looked the best from the start until i thought about it. now i see why you turned to tww.
EDIT: OMG now that i read your post about her thinking that you moving away from her is essentially breaking up with her, i say stay in NYC for sure. sorry, gf.

^^ That's kind of my view as well. Put up with ridiculously inflated cost of living, or stay with a loved one and do grad school online in what is likely a much cheaper area.
I mean, if your relationship is a relationship by name only at this point, stay in NYC, but otherwise I'd move to ohio.

PS
Also, since I believe your major will set you up to be poor forever, you might want to go with the gf since she is obviously going to be the bread winner....

things are only shaky with the gf because I chose NYC over her
if I moved with her it would demonstrate my commitment which is all she really wants from me
NYC is dirty, noisy and full of assholes with that said, I find it intriguing... but god damn will it make you poor I would like to come back here for internships and other experience - I just don't want to get trapped in the working class NYC
I work for a catering company and deliver all of the time to companies that I should be working for rather than schlepping lunch to - I just need to get some more experience. I kind of feel that if I stay here I will be too poor to afford an internship. Maybe in a more affordable situation I'll be able to save enough to get a good internship for a semester and I'm sure my gf would be willing to do long distance on mutual terms for my benefit, I just never talked this over with her. 7/15/2008 9:45:33 PM |

You could always go to Ohio with her now. Then once she finishes med school, y'all move to NYC while she works and you finish grad school. With her income and yours combined, you could afford to live in Manhattan, and your housing may even be straightened out by then.
Also, what kind of shitty grad school don't take care of their students housing?! I work for one of the NCSU departments and see a lot of their grad students, and they are all well taken care of when it comes to living expenses (IN THAT DEPT., I will not blanket that to all of NCSU)
