Attn TWW:
Has anyone here been to Vancouver? I'm going there in a couple weeks, and I'd like to know where a good place to stay is. Preferrably not in the ghetto (don't want the rental car broken into), and preferrably within walking distance or something to some sweet Canadian bars. Also, anyone know of cool stuff to do there in the daytime?
And while we're at it...same question, but with Seattle (though the hotel doesn't have to be close to a bar this time).
THANKS! 7/17/2008 10:23:22 PM |

i live halfway between vancouver and seattle, but i don't remember names of hotels we've stayed at in both.
Vancouver is weird--i'd just find a decent place to stay downtown and not worry about the area. It isn't going to matter, because you'll walk down the street and it'll be 5-star hotel, 25-cent peep show, McDonald's, expensive restaurant, porn shop, 5-star hotel...all in a row. 7/18/2008 12:22:29 AM |

I think we stayed at the Holiday Inn right on the bay. It was AMAZING. Top floor, bay side gives an awesome view of the city by night, including the center with all the ivy growing on it.
I don't remember any 'bars' - but there is an awesome restaurant across from the (don't know the name) 'tiered walkway.' You'll find an area on the long side of the bay where a concrete walkway is approximately 5' lower than the street - and the restaurant is on the corner, underground. If you're 6'+ it may be tough, but the food & drinks were top notch.
V-BC is definitely a city for touring/photographers. We took the harbor sea-plane ride. Worth every penny (even though it was like $125). Approximately 15 minutes in the air you'll see bald-head island. A rock structure completely covered in bald head eagles (maybe 2-300) - most beautiful sight I can remember. All the wildlife, the crazy shoreline (it's like a cliff), street performers, awesome people, and a laid back nightlife make it in the top 2-3 cities on my list. 7/18/2008 2:38:49 AM |

i stayed at the ywca hotel in vancouver back in 2000 with some friends for like 5 days. it's located on the islandy thing on the north side of vancouver, next to the BC Place Stadium. we had a room with 3 beds and a mini fridge... and not much else. there was a shared bathroom for the floor and a tv lounge on the next floor, but i never saw another guest in either during our stay. it looks like they've made the whole thing a lot nicer since, but for some cheap kids, you couldn't beat the price (i think our room, for 4 nights or so was like $120... total, not each day).
we walked everywhere on that trip, so i can't speak on the parking situation or safety of cars.

last time I stayed at the hotel buchan - small place - quiet street near stanley park - walking distance to everything - nice.
headed up there again in a couple weeks - staying at the blue horizon on robson - seeing if it's worth it to stay a bit closer to the center of the downtown 7/18/2008 8:08:33 AM |
