Yes, that is a Cherry wood weave. Each strand is hand cut and hand woven. Cutting the veneer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AyKCWrGAy1U Weaving the veneer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=40IRmPV_sXs

this will be a sick-looking ride, no doubt. your boy has quite a vision. every other wooden car i have seen so far looked either plain or straight retarded. on top of that, they were also carved and did not show off the versatility of various woodworking techniques like Splinter does 7/21/2008 5:57:24 PM |

I absolutely love the Cherry wood weave. It totally looks like carbon-fiber (which I love), but it's wood! I'm very amazed at this man's patients. His quality of work is just astounding to me. 7/21/2008 9:22:34 PM |

^^^ I *believe* it has it's first scheduled Tradeshow appearance in late August or Early september, so it's only got about a month of work left.
Considering there are now 6-8 people working 12-18 hours a day on it, versus the 2-3 that have been working for 2 years 18 hours a day on it, I think they'll make it 7/22/2008 1:39:33 PM |

Has the "World Exclusive". The problem is IWF doesn't allow press photography, and he gave Exclusivity rights to Wood Magazine in the US and to Orange in the UK.
I'm sure he will be posting more pictures in the coming weeks. They still have yet to mount the engine or run the electrics 8/26/2008 8:58:29 PM |

i know, i was just shocked to see that their design went against all convention.
well, at least the convention that states "any accident you can walk away from is a good one", not "rear end something and have two bloody stumps".
looks punishing, in more ways than one.

I've learned from wicker chairs that woven wood is a bad idea.
that is of course unless you stabilize it with tons and tons of resin 9/2/2008 8:03:36 AM |

I am so jealous. It doesn't matter if nothing of specific significance ever comes of this. It's just bitchin. Very very cool. At the very least, I hope someone picks up resin-retained woven cherry as an interior trim option. Gotta be cheaper than carbon fiber and much prettier. Wood trim has stagnated for too long. Also, anyone think that a wood car would have potential in an electric car application? (assuming no Li-Ion batts are used, alleviating those heat/ fire issues...) 9/4/2008 11:14:59 AM |

Hey Noen, I wonder if I could get some offcuts of that cherry weave (raw material w/o resin) to use on a skateboard or two... I'd make one for the guy in exchange for the material. Only need enough to surface the bottom of a 10x38 board, so a piece 12x40 would do it. Foam core with woven cherry would be tits.
