Just collect it in a bucket or trash can and transport it back outside where it would probably be happier. I am as scared of spiders as anyone but even I would not advocate for its mindless killing simply for existing. 7/25/2008 12:38:38 AM |

Probably just some species of wolf spider, we had a ginormous one outside living in our plant. My house is literally infested with house spiders for some reason. Never seen any other bugs but spiders (so it's beyond me what they're eating). *shivers* 7/26/2008 6:48:58 AM |

negative. wolf spiders are ground hunters, and don't spin webs. only 1 type of wolf spider spins webs, and it looks nothing like that.

negative on that as well. looks nothing like a brown recluse either. missing the tell tale "fiddle", and a recluse has skinnier legs.

Doesn't look like a brown recluse to me, the pattern and shape is all wrong.
The torso is very elongated compared to a brown recluse and lacks distinct color variation, such as in this image:
Also, the spider lacks (from what I can see) the three pairs of eyes that is typical of a brown recluse, as evidenced here:
Quote : | "The loxoceles reclusa, also well-known as brown recluse spider, or violin spider, is a small size arachnid; it measures approximately 7-12mm (1/4" - 1/2") long. The brown recluse spider color is generally brown, its body showing a peculiar cephalothorax with a dark brown spot in a violin form; the legs are light brown and the abdomen, of an oval aspect, is dark brown, yellow, or greenish yellow. The most important characteristic is the existence of 3 pairs of eyes in the cephalothorax. Normally, all the spiders have 4 pairs, 8 altogether." |
Magnifying the suspect spider shows that the eyes are centralized in one location in the middle of the 'head' area. Also, you can see there is no violin shaped colorization on its back, which is shown clearer in the second following image:
The eyes of the spider are centralized in one spot
A brown recluse spider, showing the large contrast in colorization on the torso that leads to a typical violin shape
While the lack of different colors doesn't exactly disqualify it as a brown recluse (shown below, a desert recluse spider), it does lack any tell tale markings or hints of a violin shape, which is evident on the following picture:
I believe it is just a big fucking hairy spider.

Greg,
This a spider in the family Filistatidae, Kukulcania hibernalis, sometimes called the southern house spider. It is very common on and in buildings here on campus, and is frequently mistaken for the brown recluse spider. Females may live for several years, trapping insects in the irregular strands of silk that radiate out from their retreats. So far as I know, it's venom is no more dangerous to humans than is the venom of most other spiders, and they're careful to avoid contact with us. You can find a lot more information about this species on line.
