bought this sucker today:

so i'm a canoe noob. i took the flatwater class state offers and really enjoyed it and i wanted to be able to spend some time on the water and fish a little up around raleigh. i thought i'd bring my aluminum boat up there and find somewhere to store it, then i decided to buy a canoe instead.

so, tell me your favorite places to paddle around wake county. share canoeing stories, etc.

help a canoe noob out.

yeah, i thought about that. here are the places i've heard of or had on my mind:

falls lake
lake raleigh
pullen park?
lake lynn
neuse river, but i'm completely unfamiliar with it's depth, rockiness, etc. around raleigh. and it would require a nice person to leave a vehicle for me at my take-out point

the truck is in my mom's yard. the chicken house is in my grandparents' yard next door. we got out of the chicken business several years ago.

def. not around here, but went to florida with the lil lady and family, and we went canoeing on spring creek, which goes into the chipola river.

if you're ever in marianna, fla., check it out.

for real.

it was awesome.

crystal clear water, rope swings, stuff to jump off of, etc.

there's some backways into buckhorn lake in wilson, where you dont have to pay the ramp fee
just drag the boat for a little bit. max of 30 yards, depending on which one you use

also, take it and put it into any ponds you can find around office complexes and in neighborhoods

lochmere has a few ponds and there's an office park out on poole road, but that one doesnt require a boat to fish

looking for something closer than buckhorn. besides, you could get seasick from all the damn skiers and tubers out there. i went once and tried to fish and said the hell with it. it might be ok with a canoe up in that shallow part where they can't run though. mind PMing me some details on these backways in?

where is lochmere?

^^get up with me if you ever want to take this joker out around raleigh sometime. could do some catching up.

ok, i know the names of the places. i need more info on how crowded it gets, best places to launch, etc.

share some experiences

also, if someone has a canoe and wants to show me their favorite places that'd be cool too. i'm still learning all this stuff.

im more of a river person.

my favorite trip around here is the cape fear.

start at buckhorn dam, go 16 miles down through raven rock state park and end at the new river park in erwin.

if im on a lake i want a boat with a motor

comparing canoeing with fishing from my other boat is kinda apples and oranges. i mean, they're just so different. canoe is quiet and peaceful. on the boat it's more of like just a means of getting to the fish. with the canoe, getting there is half the fun.

[Edited on July 27, 2008 at 11:17 AM. Reason : and this works out better with an apartment in raleigh, so what the hell]

I usually go to seaforth at jordan lake when im kayaking or canoeing. It can get crowded with boats at the ramps occasionally but it doesn't take long to get to the quieter fishing areas, granted i've got a trolling motor ill use on my canoe sometimes when i fish it may take a little longer paddling.

i thought about putting on a trolling motor, but i don't wanna screw with registration and all that stuff

plus, this was supposed to be a fishing-on-a-budget type thing. hell, i need the exercise
