Two individuals have been detained for questioning following a shooting
shortly after midnight Monday morning, July 28, 2008.

Two victims were shot near Wolf Village at the edge of the campus near
Western Boulevard. The victims were transported to Wake Med.

Neither the subjects detained nor the victims are affiliated with the
University.

Anyone who may have information about this incident should contact
Campus Police at 515-3000.

Members of the campus community should be aware of their surroundings
and report suspicious persons or activities to Campus Police
immediately.

'At 12:06, we were dispatched to the gazebo.' The male was shot in the abdomen and the female in the foot, and according to Barnwell, he can't say the abdomen wound isn't life-threatening. Campus Police arrived on the scene at 12:08 a.m. after receiving a call from the blue light on Sullivan Drive. 'When the male subject fled the scene, he fled to Sullivan Drive and called us from the blue light there at Motor Pool,' Barnwell said. 'The female that was shot in the foot ran around the building to the G building of Wolf Village and went in the lot.' The reason the response time frame was a little sporadic was that officers went directly to the scene based on the information that Raleigh police provided Campus Police, but the victims had already fled the scene to two different areas, 'so we had to get units there to address their medical conditions,' he said. No information on the shooter was available at the time. Sharde McNeil, an alumna, said she was inside Wolf Village when she heard gun shots. 'I didn't turn around and look ... [and my friends] didn't believe me ... because we're in Wolf Village,' she said. 'And then five minutes later, I heard police.' Jessica Fulks, a senior in textile and apparel management, was with McNeil when she heard the shots. 'We were standing out where [the shooting] happened 30 minutes before,' Fulks said. Two people were detained for questioning, though Barnwell said they aren't suspects, but that they were people in the area that had some prior history, so police wanted to clarify that they didn't have anything to do with the shooting. A White Ford Escort is also being investigated. 'The vehicle was going the wrong way on Faucette Drive ... just post-the incident. We were able to interact with it,' he said. 'We let it go at that time, but further investigation leads us to believe that it could possibly be involved, so we relocated it and gave it back to Campus Police.' The incident, he said, seemed to be an isolated random act of violence at first. However, he could not confirm or deny whether the incident was gang-related later that morning. Although shootings are not common, Barnwell said, they are an occurrence on campus. 'They do happen on occasion in the urban environment that we're in, in downtown Raleigh,' he said. 'Sometimes situations that occur in Raleigh do bleed on over to the campus.' Barnwell said this situation may cause concern for some, but Campus Police is working on the case. 'It's going to raise concerns and it's going to heighten a little bit of anxiety, but that's why we're here. We're here to get things up, back operational, back to normal, and hopefully reinstill that sense of safety within the campus community,' he said. 'We're going to of course heighten our patrolling of the area.' Police are doing interviews and following up on leads but are still in the preliminary stages, Barnwell said."

campus police spent about 3 and a half years trying to put me in prison for something that happened ONLINE (that i didn't even do!). i have no idea exactly the amount of resources allocated to that whole thing... but, folks, they are VERY busy.

way too busy, in fact, for stuff like shootings and robberies.

i mean, after all, they're not called PUBLIC SAFETY anymore like they used to be!

Judging from the fact that none of the individuals involved with the shooting had any affiliation with NCSU, this is more a function of where the campus happens to be than any problem with Campus Police, in my opinion. Sounds like two people were sitting in the Gazebo, and someone they knew came up and shot them either after an argument or over some pre-existing beef. I suppose you could say increased patrols by Campus Police could have had something to do with it, but unless a patrol happened upon an obvious argument, what could they have done exactly? Questioned the people who happened to be sitting in the gazebo late at night and made them produce IDs? I guarantee you a large percentage of the student body would complain if campus police made them produce ID just because they happened to be out late at night on campus. Can't have it both ways. Yes, we're not in the absolute best section of Raleigh here, but there's really very little that can be done about that. Not saying Campus Police are the paragon of efficiency, but I really don't see what they did wrong on this one. A non-NCSU issue that happened to end badly for two folks on NCSU property.
