How much is a silver membership?

Here is why I ask- back in like March we decided to move, so I didnt have much time for playing anymore and I packed up the 360 and didnt unpack it until we got into the new house. Also my check card wore out and I got a new one with a new number. In the meantime my one year XBOX Live Gold membership expired and they tried to charge my old invalid card. Yesterday I get on the website and update my billing info since I finally have the 360 plugged back in and they charge me $49.99. Cool, I think- my Gold membership will be renewed. But I only had a Silver... getting the gold cost me another $49.99. This cant be correct can it?

I know with a lot of games you buy new (or at least this is how it used to be) you'd get a free month or two or silver...I know I pay about $60 / year for my Gold membership, so I dunno

I had this same problem happen to me.

I had to jump through some hoops to get it fixed. Basically, call XBOX and tell them what happened. They'll escalate the ticket. Eventually, they'll refund the $49.99 they charged you, and need to do the payment through some website. It's kind of ridiculous, but I didn't have any problems getting it taken care of once the ticket was escalated. They even called the next day to ask if I was enjoying my Gold membership lol.

It looks like you can play online multiplayer on certain games with a Silver membership.

They just made Games for Windows' Live free for PC users, so the 360 games that have cross-platform multiplayer are now free to play online.

In other words, Silver users can now play Shadowrun online.
