The house of representatives have finally drew up a bill to apologize for slavery hundreds of years ago. Glad they moved on from Roger Clemens to something of much more importance.

I think it is a complete waste of time, I'm sure this will make all the black people feel much better. Of course, it is an election year, so you got to make sure you get those black votes so these politicians can stay in the "club"

this is bullshit. no one alive today had anything to do with slavery, GET THE FUCK OVER IT.

its bad enough alot of African-Americans wanted a fucking MLK drive in EVERY FUCKING CITY. I live near Lexington, and they were bitching that the county wouldn't change the name of the street that was the original street in Lexington to MLK drive. bullshit.

i'm sorry, but its like someone asking me to apologize for the holocaust. i wasn't fucking involved, nor had I anything to do with slavery. If our government is really wasting their time with this shit, it really shows what kind of state things are in.

lets not worry about our economic crisis, health care crisis, etc., etc, etmutherfuckinc

Blacks are still suffering from the effects of slavery to this day. You may not have had anything to do with it, but implicitly, if you're white, you likely have benefited from it in some way. No one's asking you to bend over backwards, but have some respect, and quit being so closeminded and selfish.

In any case, I thought our gov. had already apologized for slavery. If it really hasn't I don't see how this can hurt anything, and it certainly can help, because an apology can go a long way.

this article also had a lot to do with jim crow laws

these are laws that very much had an effect on my parents. and yes, chances are that if you are anything other than black, you indirectly benefited from these laws whether you know it or not. not to mention that fact that after these laws were repealed, they were/still are very much woven into political, corporate, and government practices
NCSUdude181, you need to open your eyes and realize what lasting effects slavery and jim crow laws have. grow up and stop pretending like this is ancient history.

What about an apology for the asians? We made some darn good railroads. Plus, everyone loves Chinese food. And Hollywood wouldn't be the same without kung fu.

Give us a cut of the cake. Blacks are always hoggin' the sympathy pie. Greedy thugs!

What about the white slaves? I think all European governments owe all whites an apology.

What about the Africans (yes, Africans sold other Africans to the US) who benefited from the slave trade?

^ so what exactly do european governments and african parties involved in the slave trade have to do with the United States apologizing for it's involvement in slavery (in the united states)?

i didn't benefit from slavery (in any way that every other person didn't benefit)

as bad as slavery was, lots of work got done... and i'm sure that modern america as a whole somehow benefitted from all that work.

but i don't have any farmers in my family, and i never inherited any type of farm land or anything like that. so yeah slavery was a terrible thing, but i can't apologize.. i can tell black people that i'm sorry it happened. not sure how its technically defined, but an apology kinda strikes me as telling someone you're sorry for something you personally did. and in those terms, i really don't think the united states should apologize either... because apologizing is pretty much acknowledging your role/responsibility. and the modern US government played no part in it. it's a waste of time on the part of the lawmakers.... and for what?

never had a slave, never had any of the blood money. i'm not ridin dirty, yo.

again, there are two parts to that article. it's also talking about jim crow laws

many MANY white families benefited during that era from things such as education, housing, employment (basically anything that people work towards today) where blacks simply weren't allowed to do those things. didn't even have the opportunity to.

bigun, you're right. they should apologize. are you suggesting that since the united states is willing to apologize, they should force everyone to apologize? (PERHAPS THROUGH SLAVERY!!1)

it would greatly strengthen the analogy you're trying to draw if you lived in rome, and were still discriminated against on some level

i was the first one in my family to be a college student. so i guess i'm an exception to the rule. that opportunity wasn't there for my parents or their parents. and before that they all lived on a mountain, so i doubt anyone before that had it either. haha

but i know what you're talking about. the country ass town where i went to high school had plenty of "well known" families, that had lots of land, old ass plantation style houses, etc. the old money rednecks.

how about during this era though? I went to school on a really nice academic scholarship because I am from a predonimantly black region of the state. I never would have gotten that benefit during the era of Jim Crow laws, but luckily I went to college a good 30 years after Jim Crow laws were broken down in my area.

Ironically, one of the largest slave owners in my home county was a black family. While they may have been affected by Jim Crow laws, they definitely don't deserve an apology for slavery.

THE ONLY PEOPLE WHO DESERVE TO APOLOGIZE FOR SLAVERY ARE THE PEOPLE WHO OWNED SLAVES

oh yea, and the blacks who sold them to us

STFU NAACP AND ANY OTHER STUPID ILLEGITIMATE ACTION GROUPS WHO WANT THIS ABSURD ACTION TO FOLLOW

both sides of my family owned slaves, it's not something i'm proud of, but i'm certainly not going to apologize for it.

About 8 years ago we sold off the last plots of land in Ramseur that was a plantation that is going to be turned into a housing development. On the other side of the family it was sold a century ago.

Considering I had to be more qualified than a black person in order to receive the same academic scholarship, I feel like that's compensation enough. How does anyone ever make progress if people black or white keep dwelling on this shit.

I mean, the point i'm trying to make is what place to people in congress have to apologize for slavery? They didn't own any slaves personally, if I were a black person, I would feel disrespected that they'd be so insincere just to try to garner my vote.
