Say you're unemployed and looking around for a new job. A good friend from college just starting working for a firm on St. Thomas. He says he can get you a decent position within the company and needs a roommate for his beach front apt. He says the job would be at minimum a 1 year contract and would pay around $60-70k.

I'm in the middle of moving back from NYC to NC (to look for jobs in Raleigh) but this is a tempting offer. I have no girlfriend to worry about, no apartment lease, no car payments. Only thing is I told him I have to be able to bring my dog.

How seriously would you consider this and would you do it?

could you bring your dog? does that work?

if you could bring your dog, then yes. why not really. its a job. its only a year. i guess you have to decide if it'd be worth it in terms of your long term career goals. but if it isn't going to set you back, then why not.

if there's no catch and the job doesn't totally suck, that contract would've been signed yesterday.

I'm worried about long term career goals, as well as getting back to being closer to friends and family. I was in NYC for 3 years so didn't see a lot of them as often.

Oh the other hand, I spent a week in Hawaii and fell in love with the underwater marine life. If I lived in the virgin islands I could go snorkling and SCUBA diving all the time, not to mention work on my surfing (they have decent waves there?)

Only things are my buddy told me that electricity and water are ridiculously expensive, like $0.14/kWh for electricity.

Yeah Saps, I was looking for you earlier

if you don't have longterm goals you're working towards, and nothing really keeping you on the mainland, go for it

if you're wanting to work on whatever your career is, and this isn't it, probably not a good idea

why are you making threads about this on TWW? you should be packing up!

Seriously, this sounds like a once in a lifetime offer. You get to go to a tropical paradise and you still make decent money. Sounds like a no brainer to me.

Well as a matter of fact I have been packing. Movers are coming to get my stuff on August 3rd. Its going into storage in Raleigh after that. All I'll have with me are my clothes after that.

The apt my buddy has down there is fully furnished so I shouldn't need anything.

What I want to do career-wise long term is a big deciding factor. From a lifestyle point of view I feel like I've been floating around NYC for 3 years (lived 5 different places) and I was looking for some permanency moving back to Raleigh. If I went to St. Thomas I wouldn't have that feeling.

On the other hand its a once in a lifetime opportunity (just as going to NYC was).

ugh, I don't know what to do.

if you're not settled, head there; you might settle there

with no gf/job/career/kids/family really keeping you in raleigh/elsewhere, why not head somewhere for a year or so?

PSSSSH--you don't NEED electricity. our ancestors got along just fine without it. only really need it at night and for the internet. just grill everything

and i'd go...if it was easy for us to just up and move to the beach (or florida) we would've done it already. you're in a great position to do this--so go already!!

and ah...we won't delay on visiting you down there like we did for NYC (i'm so mad we're going 4 days after you move back here).

This shouldn't even be a debate. Go!

It's one year...it'll fly bye. It's not like you're moving to India where it takes forever to get back to the US. You could come home for weekends easily....if you even wanted to.

Okay, so I'm looking more deeply into this. My friend's cousin owns the company so I have an in. The company is internet advertising and the position would be account analysis and management. I'm gonna send him my resume today. I have no experience in these areas but they offer complete training. They're just looking for smart competent people.

Okay I was wrong about that. Electricity is $14.00/kWh, and my buddy said his utility bill is $500/month, ouch. However, not a deterant. Oh, and I'm in luck dogs are allowed at the place I'd live.

I suppose at the least if they wanted to interview me I'd get a free (mostly) trip to St. Thomas.

most people pay 1000s of dollars just to visit that place for a few days. You're getting paid $60-70K to live in one of the most beautiful places on the planet.

I'd jump all over it

^^^well my buddy who took the job with that company just graduated a few months ago with a medical degree in pharmocolgy and toxicology and he's already said he'll probably never go back to the medical field. That sounds pretty crazy in its own right.

^well played, Drod. I think you just want me to move there so you can come visit!

Both of the pics in this thread show Trunks Bay, which is actually on St. John's. Its only like a 10 min ferry ride to get to St. Johns though. Meagen's Bay is the place to go on St. Thomas.
