So I left my laptop on top of my car the other day and forgot about it as I made my journey back to State from my home in Wilmington. When i got to Raleigh i realized what had happened. I bought the computer through the school bookstore and was just wondering if there was anything I could do. Ive already had some friends look for it on the road but no luck. I haven't had time to go to the bookstore yet so I thought I would ask yall first. Thanks, and any advice will help. Im afraid that I might just have to suck it up and by another one.

If you can find it and it's still under warranty it will be repaired/replaced if you have the Thinkpad protection (which you should if you got it from the bookstore).

More than likely it fell off very, very close to your house...I really doubt it stayed up there long.

If you can't find it and you don't have some type of 3rd party insurance or have it covered under homeowners/renters insurance then you might want to go shopping this weekend since it's Tax Free weekend in NC.

^^^ They keep original register and/or online-order receipts on hand for up to 4 years after the purchase. If you DO have insurance the bookstore can give you a complete itemized receipt (with whatever info about the store/manager you need) as well as the original specs and cost of current comparable models.

You probably do not want to claim it on homeowner's insurance. The deductible is usually high and the chance of being dropped and/or blacklisted is not worth it. If you have renter's insurance you probably have a lower deductible and the chance of being dropped or blacklisted is much lower. It does help to be able to provide credible info like they keep on file for you at the bookstore.

Someone within 1/4 mile of your home probably has it. Post some flyers. If nothing else you might be able to salvage the HDD and memory for data and upgrades to your next one.

Depending on how old your Thinkpad is, it might have the LoJack hardware. But, it's a monthly/yearly subscription. And I think you have to activate/enable it before the machine is lost/stolen. I'm assuming you didn't, so I guess you're SOL.

I was so speechless about the OP that I read it and didn't leave a comment right away. Even now, I can't think of a good comment to say... just, WOW... I mean you leave coffee and other drinks on top of your car, not a laptop.

Meh, he had a moment of forgetfulness and it's going to cost him plenty. No need to add extra hate on top of it.

I had a girlfriend who's father packed her laptop in the back of UHAUL (already a fuck up) and didn't latch the door. it fell out on the highway.

just go buy a cheaper one from a consumer electronics store.
