there are no poisonous snakes. there are only venomous and non-venomous snakes.

and no, the snakes in lake johnson are not venomous. they're mostly northern water snakes, if they are actually in and around the water. if you're in the woods, there are possibly copperheads, which are venomous.

snakes are venomous, not poisonous. the snakes in and around lake johnson that you will find are: ringnecks (harmless), dekays (harmless), northern water (harmless but will bite), banded water (harmless but will bite), black rat (harmless), worm (harmless), garter (harmless), and copperheads which are venomous but you usuallly won't see them as they tend to be very cryptic during daylight hours.

Whatever prompted you to ask this question...don't do it. Just leave the snakes alone.

I don't think one can completely rule out water moccasins being in and around Lake Johnson.

Would someone please explain this?

Some of you snake people get all up in arms over these words being interchanged, and as far as I'm concerned (until someone enlightens me), they are interchangeable.

then do yourself a favor and dont think. raleigh is not within the range of the cottonmouth. if i remember correctly, only a very few cottonmouths have ever been found in all of wake county, and they have only come from the extreme eastern portion of the county.

plain and simple, if you dont know how to identify snakes, dont fuck with them.

ambrosia...poison is absorbed into the bloodstream. venom is injected. we get up in arms about it just as anyone who is specialized in a certain field would if someone used terminology incorrectly. we do, however, recognize the fact that the terms are synonymous to the general public.

Venomous=Animals that inject venom. Usually is stored in an organ that produces it

Poisonous=Plants or animals that secrete poison. Can be spread out anywhere along the organism

I've seen a baby copper head on the trail right behind my apt at wildwoods and i've seen a couple of water snakes but that's all. I just let it slither past before I kept going because I wasen't sure about copperheads but I know baby rattlesnakes will fuck you up because it can't control it's venom so it wasen't worth pissing it off.

Like I said i've seen a few water snakes when on the trail, but you know when it's a cottenmouth and i've never seen one.

^^just b/c a snake is in the water and semi aggressive doesn't mean its a water moccasin.

Uhh,
Quote :
"The Water Moccasin is a dangerously venomous snake found through most of the Coastal Plains, ranging as far north as Virginia"

Water Moccasins are very buoyant and you see them floating on the water, most other snakes will be submerged except their heads. The inside of their mouths is white, hence the term Cottonmouth also used to name a water moccasin.

GASP monarch butterflies are poisonous? cray crayyy.

i googled the difference. poisonous doesn't have to bite you. venomous means they have to bite or sting you to get the poison on/in you. but poisonous animals you can just touch or they can spit on you and you can get it?

that is what i took away from my 5 second google search.

^ right but whats his face said cottonmouths weren't prevalent in wake county

Thanks for your explanation (and those of everyone else )

I do beg to differ on your assertion that anyone who specializes in a field would get upset over incorrect terminology.

I wager that most of you people who call the spun lengths of fiber mass in your woven or knitted clothes 'threads' don't know that the proper terminology is 'yarns'. A thread is a type of yarn, and pretty much reserved for finishing purposes. Yarns are what fabrics are woven and knitted of.

My point here being that most folks recognize that laypeople aren't going to know the terminology of their field, and that if they do speak up after a mistake is made, they're usually willing to offer some edification instead of just saying 'goddammit, that's wrong!'

According to this:

http://www.naturalsciences.org/research/herpetology/Venomous_Snakes_of_NC.pdf

You can find the cottonmouth and copperhead in Wake County. You may come across a Timber Rattlesnake, but that would be a rarer occurance.

^^^haha
