Anyone have any experience with changing a fuel filler hose?

The repair shop isn't totally sure my gas tank is leaking because of a faulty fuel filler hose. They want over $400 to change it on top of labor I'm already paying. They are usually good about pricing but I searched around online and found the part for $99-$150. I was thinking there may be some other labor intensive costs that I'm not aware of. I've seen on some Ranger forums that you can take the bed off instead of the gas tank to make it a little easier.

I've also read that some tanks with a faulty fuel filler hose are fine for a while unless you fill the tank all the way up. Hopefully to buy me some time to order and replace it.

was the over 400 quote for pulling the bed off or dropping the tank?

have you called the dealer to be sure about the correct and only part you will need for the job?

it was for the tank because they already pulled it off

they tried to just get a new tank because he said it may come with the part but it has been discontinued and he could only find a used tank with no guarantee of additional parts

i'm not really sure what your question is. are you asking if $400 is too much to pay for the part+labor? when you say this is in addition labor you're already paying, what does that mean? labor to replace the filler hose or labor for some other repair?

iirc, this is a common issue on the ranger/b-series and is a dealer only part with a ridiculous price.

i have had a ton of rangers with fuel leak problems, and they have all been from shitty fuel sending units or fuel pumps.

It's coming out to ~$220 with just removing the tank and replacing some gaskets. It will be another $400 for the fuel filler hose plus installing it on a tank that is already removed. Total of aobut $620.


The fuel tank is off right now, but they said there is no way to know if the fuel filler hose is the problem without filling it back up.

I had a hole in my fuel filler neck hose and one of the fuel lines ruptured. I replaced both fuel lines and used this rubber tape stuff to fix the fuel filler neck. The dealership wanted $460 for a new one. Even the lady on the phone from the dealership told me to find a replacement in a junkyard or fix it myself. The holes were on the bottom side of the filler neck hose, so everything I put gas in the tank it leaked out onto the top of the gas tank. It was an easy fix and I haven't had any problems since.

Removing the bed is not hard at all, just remember there is an electrical connection for the taillights right underneath the tailgate.

1. Remove tailgate.
2. Unplug electrical connection
3. Remove bolts holding down bed.
4. Remove bolts holding filler neck to bed.
5. You and someone else remove bed.
6. Repair fuel filler neck holes with rubber tape (<$5).
7. Put everything back together.
8. Profit.

even if a crack/hole isn't obvious, it's not rocket science to pressure test the tank and filler neck/hose with air. you better hope that's not the problem, or you'll be paying labor all over again to drop the tank or pull the bed.

they must be pricing a dealer replacement part for the filler neck/hose like i mentioned above for it to be that much.

honestly though, who the hell goes through the trouble of dropping the tank on a ranger, if the neck didn't leak before, it will now from all the bending and twisting
