My academic adviser told me that I will eventually want to take Statistics 421 if I want to do Econ Phd.
I probably won't get a chance to take it for a while (I'm thinking possibly Fall of '09 if it's offered).
What is this class like? Who should I take? 8/4/2008 2:59:43 PM |

There is only one offering of the course each Fall. The course has been taught by Dr. Gerig for years... however I believe he is in the process of retiring, so he may not be teaching the course in Fall 2009.
Are you only required to take 421? Usually it is followed by 422. Both are demanding, typically time consuming courses. 8/4/2008 4:24:51 PM |

Right now we're only talking ST 421, though I did see that it is part of a two-class sequence. I will have to ask her next week whether I should take both.
How much MA 242 stuff is involved? That's the part I'm worried about. Calc II was the lowest grade of my academic career (C-) and it's been almost 4 years since I took that (graduated and have been working in research for the past 3 years). So if it requires a lot of knowledge from Calc II, I want to start preparing early. 8/4/2008 4:35:53 PM |

Calculus of varying levels is an integral part of the course. The harsh reality is that you won't do well if you're spending all of your time trying to remember calculus instead of focusing on the new application. You should definitely start prepping early. 8/4/2008 4:48:10 PM |

pretty sure gerig is going to be teaching it for awhile. but 421/422 are the 2 hardest stat classes for stat majors. really...i dont think i will ever use any of what i learned in that classes in the real world with any job, could be wrong though but everything about it just seemed so abstract. again, be ready to teach yourself. 8/14/2008 11:03:16 PM |

This course was the devil.
I only passed because Gerig allowed us to take in 1-4 pages of notes
