See, that's what I've always found interesting about that song. He calls it 'coke', clearly because of his NC roots, but then talks about a combo meal costing 10 bucks, which just doesn't happen here.

Anyway, what's the green? Pepsi?

"I'll have a soda from the fountain," is how I say it.

My cousins in Nebraska thought I was nuts. "wtf is soda? baking soda?"

I never thought of calling it Coke as a NC thing. I thought that was mainly Georgia and further south.

and fuck I have this song stuck in my head now.

I hadn't heard "pop" until I went to DC for a government conference with some kids from Rhode Island.

when I went to Wisconsin in hs. it was weird hearing people call soda pop. I say coke because I actually only drink coke so its the only soda i ever refer to.

yeah, I definitely got in the habit of saying "pop" when I was a kid in KS

but the kids here made fun of me

so I've since switched to "soda"

I say coke at restaurants just so when they ask if Pepsi is alright I can look really upset and say "WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY TO ME? HONEY, WE'RE LEAVING."

I don't think I say either. I just call it "drink". "Do you want a drink? What kind of drink do you want?"

I have never understood why people say coke.

Do they say it for every soft drink?

I can't imagine a conversation like "I want a coke"
"what kind"
"Sprite"

[Edited on August 7, 2008 at 11:02 PM. Reason : I say soda, or soft drink]

soft drink, soda, coke sometimes but not really

i usually just say "drink" and/or call it by its name "what would you like to drink?" OR if someone asks me "sprite, please"

but then i guess there's times i'm at places like baseball games or something and someone will go grab food/drinks and i'll just say "get me a coke or something" but the people i'm with usually know i don't REALLY mean coke

It makes even less sense when I start going to get the coke and they chime in like "Oh, I wanted ginger ale!" Bitches.

Yeah, NC is the only place I have been to in the south where less than 99% of the people say Coke.

and by 'South' I am counting VA, and Kentucky (states further north than NC)

soft drink, then soda, then coke - for generic names
but if I'm ordering/talking about soft drinks I'll typically just say the exact name

Used to have that conversation like that a lot when I was younger: when my grandparents were freshly back to the states, when I lived with some backwardass hicks, and before I learned to ask "do you have coke or pepsi products here?" before ordering a diet coke. I ordered a diet coke, thank you...not a diet pepsi. Get that nasty shit out from in front of me.

Motherfucker, 'coke' is not a catchall for soft drinks. It's a brand of cola. And sprite isn't a fucking cola.

::something about cola being brown, and inbred swine only seeing brown because they live with their heads up their asses::

Who the fuck says "soft drink"? (besides wdprice3)

That's like saying someone's whole name every time you see them.
