Mapp gas is made from combining liquefied petroleum and Methylacetylene-Propadine. It can be used for heating, brazing, metalizing, soldering, flame hardening and cutting. Mapp gas produces a flame temperature of 5301° F (2927° C) and 2405 Btus. Making it a good choice when a hotter flame is neded for example breaking a rust bond on a pipe or a large plumbing repair that is at leat 2”. " |
The solder doesn't get quite that hot, and it hardens and and falls off when it hits your skin. It sticks in your hair, though. The trick is not to flinch or jerk too much when it hits you while you're working with the torch. I was soldering a pipe in a ceiling near the tiles and got some on me while working overhead. Yesterday I was installing a water heater under a house and soldering near insulation so I had to be steady so not to catch the insulation on fire.
BTW...bacon grease may be worse than solder b/c it blisters and you feel it for hours. Solder just burns for a few seconds then you can't feel that spot for about an hour.8/10/2008 9:19:16 PM |
