So I'm teaching these two online classes (community college), and they begin on monday.

This is my first semester doing this shit so

Should I:

A. Be a total asshole and assign work like this is their only class.
B. Do just two tests (mid/final) and laugh at those who fail.
C. Just stop posting on TWW forever.
D. Be a laid back professor that doesn't really grade much till the end of the term and then post all grades at the last possible second with obvious steppe curves.

in my experience, it works best if you lay down the ground rules and syllabus from the get go. let them know what's up.
then be a laid back instructor. teach class very casually. offer your time to help the students. make them enjoy coming to class...

but don't hesitate to fuck their shit up if they aren't following rules or doing work

i put in my syllabus:

No late work will be accepted. The only exception to this rule is Armageddon, in which case I will accept work 1 day late for half credit.

also, make their current standing in the class available to them at all times. that way you don't have to sympathize with people who decide they want to start trying to pass 5 days before the class is over

F. It doesn't matter, just get ready to have fucking parents calling you (no milfs) why did my kid fail. Why aren't you treating my kid fair....blah, blah, blah. This is too much work for my kid, you're overworking these kids.

aha, I used to get calls and emails from parents all the time. I'd just say " I gave them all the syllabus the first day of class. they knew from the first day every single thing they had to turn in to me*m and when. nothing was stopping them from turning the assignments in early either. additionally, they knew what they would be graded on. I have office hours, and am available by appointment as well. your child has known their grade standing from the very beginning, so it shouldn't be a surprise to them that they aren't doing well"

usually at that point, the parent realized that their kid fucked up....not me
