I have mixed feelings over this issue. I think it is possible for words to have a great deal of power, but I have always thought that some people are overly sensitive. I use the words "gay" and "retarded" negatively all the time. I don't mean anything by it, but it is just the way that I speak -- like many people my age.

But then I had a child who is different. I hate some of the words that are thrown around him like "birth defect" or "repair" because they imply that there is something wrong with him that needs to be fixed. I am sensitive to the language that is used in referring to him because I know that he will one day take the message that these words unintentionally send to heart. I do not ever want him to think that he is defective or needs to be fixed.

It's tough.

What's the big deal with calling them retarded? Hell, it's more of an insult to call them intellectually disabled. Think about it...disabled means incapable as if the switch is just off...retarded simply means they develop at a slower rate. So, instead of giving them any chance of catching up they are just writing them off as being completely incapable of performing normal tasks.
