This has been passed down in my family, and it has to be the best soup you can imagine. Just thought I would share it with everyone. I made it today and I'll have enough to last for at least a week. I'm sure its very similiar to everyone else's soup, but it may be a little different. Enjoy!

You need a SERIOUSLY large pot - we're talking cauldron size - takes about 4 hrs to cook

You'll need:
3 lbs ground beef
6 large cans of whole tomatoes
5 cans of creamed style corn
2 cans of green peas
6 cans of great northern beans
4 cans of lima beans
5 large onions
8 cans of diced potatoes

DO NOT DRAIN ANY OF CANS - YOU'LL USE IT IN THE SOUP!

Put the potatoes in the pot - add the ground beef (don't cook it first, just toss it in there) - then add your chopped up onions - add water until it covers the potatoes, beef, and onions - stir it until the beef is well mixed in the mixture - then add your green peas, northern beans, and lima beans to it - after all of this is in the pot, make sure theres about an inch of water covering the ingredients - you'll want to cook this on medium for about 2 hrs - until your potatoes are falling apart, onions are soft, and beans are soft - then you'll throw the tomatoes in a food processor, or blender - turn them into a puree' and toss em in the soup - add the corn after that - mix well, let it cook for another 2 hrs, but on a lower setting - you're going to have to stir it about every 5-10 mins, or its gonna stick, no matter what you try

if anyone tries it, let me know - I have loved this soup since I was a child, hope someone else can oh, and you'll most likely freeze a bunch of it, thats what we do, and eat it for the next month or so

eheh yeah I'm gonna try chicken in it one day - my grandmother wouldn't ever eat it with chicken though, so I had to make it with beef

All that is added to it is peas and great northern beans.

I can add two ingredients to a buerre blanc and it's still a goddamned beurre blanc.

Not actually.

Stew refers to something broken down into small pieces and cooked at a low temperature, for an extended period of time in order to break down the ingredients. This includes items that are cooked in this way that are served in a way that is not in any way a soup. Though commonly the liquid is made into a sauce being that it contains a great deal of the flavor of the meat.

Soup is simply a dish that is predominately liquid.

sounds like a city boy soup to me. a redneck would use:

FRESHLY PICKED tomatoes, peas, beans, onions, potatoes, and make his own creamed corn.

none of this canned bullshit

my granny's vegetable soup is a ham bone, a bunch of tomato juice she canned herself from home grown tomatoes, and a bunch of home grown vegetables

well the thing is, back in the day, we always used freshly picked vegetables - we grow our own, we jus didn't have a good summer, having barely any rain - I just put the canned veggies because most people don't pick their own - that and our tomatoes look horrible this year

my mom has a recipe similar to this that she calls Gravy Train, except she doesn't put potatoes or beans in it and uses whole kernel corn. You spoon it over top of mashed potatoes. SOOOOO good.

so my old roommate... she used to make this soup

except she would just put the enormous pot (with a lid on it MAYBE) in the fridge taking up all of the god damned space for a week or more

and she almost certainly would never finish it

so I hate this soup cause it stinks up the fridge and never gets eaten

want a better soup? broth with Czech liver balls

you know what would make that soup even better (aside from using fresh ingredients)? dump in a pound or two barley. better mouth feel, chewiness, more filling, and healthier.

mmmm comfort food.

I was hoping for some badass backwoods chili recipe or something (yes I'm aware it says "Redneck Soup", but still).
Definitely fresh veggies instead of canned. And you don't have to grow your own, although that would be tastier and very redneck.
It's good have a recipe like Brunswick on hand though and then to spice it up as you like: add in some good spices to taste, some green onions, celery, whole corn (instead of creamed), carrots, peppers... then put shredded cheese on top and have english muffins or plain bagels on the side. Mmm.

Damn I'm ready for Fall.
