I am try to pull some old files off a Dell Dimension 4600 here at work. Not one of the USB ports works with any of the following: USB Mouse, keyboard, Flash Drive, USB HUB, or Passport Drive. I tried updating the chipset and the bios but neither had any effect.


Any ideas?

pull the harddrive and put it into another machine or into and enclosure and copy the files off.

i am about to take the hard drive out and do that but the USB ports still dont work.

I notice that the Computer Management console doesn't ID them either

try reseting the bios settings to default, and booting to a usb device.


if that doesnt work, they're shot.


While the front usb may have been plugged in incorrectly or unplugged, this doesnt apply to the onboard usb ports.


It's strange that they would all die at once.

exactly, there is no reason why they should all not be working.


I'll try resetting the BIOS, I guess.

are you sure the usb ports are enabled? even after resetting, did you look in the bios and double check?

I'm no computer wiz by far, but that has happened to me twice.

The first time was a laptop right out of the box and the USB ports were disabled.

Second time was when I updated the bios, for some reason, it disabled the usb ports.

In both cases, i just went into the bios/setup and enabled them, and that was it.

yeah the dell bioses have an option to turn off the usb ports in just about every version i've ever seen
