bela karolyi made that point. He doesn't have a problem so much with the fact that they're young (remember he coached nadia when she won gold at 14) but that its against the rules. If 12-14 yr olds are the best at gymnastics, let them compete, don't have an age restriction. Either way, just follow the rules.
what I want to know is if they do prove her to be 14, is the whole team stripped of their gold or does she just lose her team and individual golds.8/21/2008 8:51:47 PM |

^the whole team will lose their gold medals. its crazy to think anything else would happen.
Quote : | "The minimum age for female gymnasts was increased from 14 to 15 in 1981, and up to 16 in 1997, to protect the physical and mental health of young athletes.
Nadia Comaneci was 14 when she won her fist Olympic gold medal in 1976. Yet despite her stardom, there were criticisms that young girls were being pushed too hard at an age when their bodies and bones were still growing, causing permanent damage. Ironically her coach was Mr Karolyi.
There were also concerns about their mental health, because of the pressure of competing on the world stage at such a young age, and that they were vulnerable to exploitation and even physical abuse by coaches. " |

personally I think they shouldn't but may. the rule is in place to protect people like her, simply enforcing a medal revocation would go against the basis of the rule's existence in the first place.
if there is blame to be laid it's the people that forged her documents. she's the best in the world and that's who gets the gold medal 8/21/2008 9:11:02 PM |

^ basically
people keep saying that she's the best in the world
well she might be for her age
but older gymnasts have to work against more things
most notably puberty, which destabilizes their center of gravity
not to mention the natural wear and tear that doing gymnastics for longer would take on some of the older gymnasts' bodies 8/21/2008 9:24:55 PM |

i agree but if an entire country told her she'd get away with it and it wasn't a big deal, she'd be on that shit so fast.

part of the reason why the age limit is put in place is to protect against abuses resulting from the pressures put on elite competitors by coaches and parents. puberty is an issue like Fuschia said; a lot of pressure can be put on girls to use various methods of suppressing puberty which can have significant impact on their development and long-term health. If there is a limit of only having 16 year olds compete instead of 14 year olds, it becomes impractical and much more difficult to do, so it reduces that pressure and levels the playing field. 8/21/2008 9:44:40 PM |

As much as the pro-US part of me hopes that happens, it is kinda unfair to the other Chinese members who may not have known about it (or if they did, were threatened with re-education)
Probably the CHinese women besides her would keep gold, and our team gets gold, 3rd place gets silver, and 4th gets bronze (kinda like they did with the French judge back in 02)
Whats more important besides the medals though, is it will put a big stain on China's credibility to host a fair olympics, damage their international image, and no one in their right mind will hold a respectable sporting event in there again...

^^ But if you watched the gymnastics events, it's VERY clear that some of them did not deserve their medals, despite not being the youngest of the team. Their leader, Cheng Fei, landed on her fucking knees during vault and still got a bronze medal, robbing Sacramone who landed both her vaults successfully.
There was some messed-up scoring, regardless. 8/22/2008 12:15:29 AM |

Oh yes, but Im hoping this is like a house of cards, one investigation leads to another. Scoring is generally fucked up in gynmastics right now IMO, they went from one bad score in 2004 to multiple now.
Again, embarassing the Chinese govt is high priority to me.

hold on here. it puts older gymnasts at a disadvantage b/c of puberty? so the fuck what? this isn't equal opportunity medals, this is a world class competition. if you're the best then you're the best.
puberty??

ummm... given that puberty fucks with your CENTER OF BALANCE, i'd say that's a HUGE advantage for pre-pubescent females. then, again, there's the whole weight-vs-power ratio thing... the whole higher flexibility thing...
you know, the whole cheating thing, basically
but hey, age doesn't matter, right? let's just let 15 year olds play teeball, right? it's only an age difference. let's let 15 year olds play peewee league football. it's only an age difference, right?

so what? if younger girls are better then younger girls are better.
what's your point?
they keep old kids out of teeball b/c they're too good, but this isn't ymca teeball, it's the fucking olympics. the whole point is that the people competing are THE BEST. why would you exclude someone b/c they're too good?
w/e, you're a fucking idiot. Walk-ons are competent
Thank you so much for insulting the efforts of the players on the men's basketball team. I'm sure they will have a blast over the next couple days trying to figure out which "6 or 7" of them are "competent." It's so kind to refer to walk-ons as incompetent members of the team. Walk-on players practice just as hard, and they put in the same amount of effort as their counterparts with scholarships. Furthermore, no one should call players like Bryan Nieman or Dennis Horner incompetent. Nieman played a huge role in our victory over Virginia in the tournament, hitting two crucial and back-breaking three-point shots, as well as being exceptionally scrappy on the defensive end of the floor. Horner also made huge contributions to our ACC tournament run. The fact is, we should applaud our walk-ons for their efforts this season. We should applaud them for their dedication and work. And we should applaud them for doing all of this without being offered scholarships. Please, don't denigrate their efforts or even begin to suggest that they aren't competent.

They just mentioned that the entire American relay team that won Gold in Sydney was stripped of their medal last year because ONE guy admitted to doping.
So yeah, the whole team would lose their medals, and they would go from 6 overall medals, with 2 gold, to 2 overall medals, both bronze.
Quote : | "so what? if younger girls are better then younger girls are better.

Dude, there are rules.
If you think the rules are wrong, and need to be changed, then that's one thing.
But China has broken the rules as they currently stand, and thus cheated.
