Quote : | "OAKLAND -- An early Friday morning traffic stop on an Oakland street turned deadly when the suspect attempted to drive away with an officer hanging out of the car.
Around 2:40 a.m., an officer patrolling alone in his car observed a "suspicious vehicle" with two occupants parked in the 1500 block of Jefferson Street, police spokesman Jeff Thomason said.
The officer approached the vehicle on the driver's side and smelled marijuana, according to Thomason.
The officer attempted to handcuff the driver while he was still sitting in the car with the engine off, but "a fight started and the officer was thrown into the vehicle as the vehicle got started," Thomason said.
The suspects started to drive away with the officer half inside the car and made a U-turn before crashing into a parked car, Thomason said.
That impact threw the officer into the backseat, and the driver of the suspect vehicle continued to try to escape but hit another parked car a few feet away, according to Thomason.
Two other officers on Jefferson Street observed the kidnapping attempt and "fearing for the officer's safety inside the vehicle, fired at the driver," Thomason said.
The officer who was thrown into the suspect car suffered non-life threatening injuries, Thomason said.
The suspect driver who was shot was transported to a local hospital and pronounced dead a short time later.
The passenger in the suspect car was taken into police custody for questioning.
Police later recovered a gun from the suspect car, but Thomason said he didn't know whether the suspect driver had been reaching for the gun when the officer shot him.
A "large amount of narcotics" was found in the suspect car as well, Thomason said.
It was the third officer-involved shooting in the last two months. On Aug. 2, Antoine Ford, 24, was spotted by patrol officers standing on 24th Street west of Adeline Street. The officers knew Ford to be a parolee who has carried firearms in the past.
Authorities said Ford was acting suspiciously and one of the officers exited his police vehicle. Ford turned and walked away from the officer, ignoring the officer's commands to stop and show the officer his hands.
Ford then pulled a handgun from his waistband and concealed it in the wheel well of a parked car, according to police.
The 24-year-old continued to ignore the officer's commands. When Ford attempted to retrieve the handgun from the wheel well, the officer discharged his service pistol striking the Ford once. He was transported to a local hospital and treated for his injuries.
On July 25, officers stopped Mack "Jody" Woodfox on suspicion of drunken driving near the intersection of Fruitvale Avenue and 17th Street.
After stopping his car, Woodfox jumped out and ran away from two officers, police said.
Officer Hector Jimenez shot Woodfox several times, including at least three times in the back. Woodfox was unarmed, but Jimenez told officials he appeared to be reaching for his waistband, police said.
The police department's homicide unit and internal affairs division are investigating the incident. The Alameda County district attorney's office is conducting its own investigation. Woodfox’s family has filed a $10 million claim against the city. " |
Does anyone else find it ironic that the cops were worried about the officer in the car, so they began shooting at the car?8/22/2008 3:20:39 PM |
