so I dropped my girlfriends laptop and the hinges are now loose. I took it to geek squad and they said it would be at least 135 to fix. It works fine but I was wondering if there was anything else I could do? It's a toshiba

^oh hey great advice! Why didn't I think of that? I mean shit, accidents never happen or anything. I'm sure you've never dropped anything before.

yup they do, that's why you try to see if there are any alternatives first.

ha. they could have broken like mine and now I have to prop the screen up. didn't drop it but I guess I opened and closed it too much. HP hinges suck anyways.

$135 seems too reasonable for a Geek Squad repair price... I bet you just need to tighten some screws.

$135 doesnt seem too bad to replace both hinges

I'd look for a service manual and take that bitch apart though.

Probably the best idea. The hinges themselves shouldn't be too hard to find. You might have to buy a system that somebody's already scavenged half the parts out of and resell what's left, but I'll bet you could find those hinges somewhere. Contact Toshiba's parts department and ask what the part number is for that and how much it would cost to buy. You then google for the part number and see if you can beat their price. Dismantling the hinges shouldn't be too difficult if you're comfortable working with fiddly breakable stuff. If you're not willing to spend several hours taking it apart and recognizing the fact that you're probably going to damage it more than somebody who has the right tools/service manuals to know how to fix it, it may be best just to pay the money and be done with it. If it's older, just crack the bish open and go to town after backing up the files and make sure you have enough $ laying around to pick up a laptop from slickdeals on the cheap.
