Chuck. Chuck. It's Marvin - your cousin, Marvin BERRY. You know that new sound you're looking for? Well, listen to this.
Seriously though, if this were more than a week away and/or less than 100 miles away, I'd be there for Islands

i only knew about chuck berry because the dude who panhandles outside jackpot (leon) told me he was playing
and then when i checked online to confirm it, i saw the shit about islands
but the publicity has been terrible...there's just a few signs hanging on light poles downtown with no performance details 8/25/2008 1:36:25 PM |

I'd like to see Arrested Development. I wonder if they'll give a shout out to Wendell NC when they play "Mr. Wendell." 8/25/2008 1:38:28 PM |

I am living in St Louis where Chuck lives and plays (Blueberry Hill) every month. Saw him about 4 months ago. For a dude that old he still rocks it out. He forgot a few songs and played Jonny B Good twice in a row, but like said before without Chuck Berry there is no Rock and Roll. Go see him if you can. 8/25/2008 11:11:09 PM |

I had no idea, and I read basically every major Raleigh website and blog on a daily basis in the mornings at work. They still haven't announced any of the other bands. And later the city of Raleigh will wonder why this thing fails...
On another interesting note...
Quote : | "The Cherry Bounce Alternative Music Festival is named in honor of a cocktail that very well may be the reason there is a Raleigh. Cherry Bounce is a mash of cherries, sugar and whiskey or brandy. It became legendary in 1792 when the a commission of nine men appointed by the General Assembly went in search of a site to serve as North Carolina’s permanent capital. Col. Joel Lane, a Revolutionary War veteran and gregarious tavern and inn keeper, convinced the officials that his parcel of 1,000 acres was the perfect location for the Tar Heel capital. Many claimed that the commissioners were influenced by Col. Lane’s libation, which he liberally shared and of which they had become quite fond!" |
EDIT: Guess they added a few more bands

Chuck Berry was announced sometime late July/early August I think. Indy mentioned the Annuals playing it a few weeks ago (I think when my "Listening with..." piece ran, which was late July too I think). Pretty sure Islands were announced pretty early on too. They announced more of the schedule about a week and a half ago. The non-locals were all on the convention center's website before that. NewRaleigh.com has been on top of a lot of the announcements.
So yeah, word has gotten out somewhat. But they still put out the full lineup really late for an event for this size and the publicity for it pretty much sucks. It's the same weekend that the International Festival will be held at the convention center though, so that will help fuel attendance too.8/27/2008 4:52:25 PM |

part of me hopes that hanna shows up as just a huge rain shower

RWE was when they opened Fayetteville Street to traffic.
RWE2 was last year, just for fun.
RWE3 is just an annual continuation, but is also a grand opening of sorts for the Convention Center. 9/3/2008 3:01:14 PM |

^ Chuck Berry is a punk rocker.
^^ That's a pretty common way to do it, with single speaker amps, but when you have two/four speakers it's really hard to get decent mic placement if you're using the handles as stands. I think the fact that the Cherry Bounce stage was tiny helped with moving toward space-saving measures. 9/8/2008 1:32:37 PM |
