So I locked my keys to my bedroom in my room today. I've tried to pick it with a credit card and it wont work. Also, i dont think the door knob has screw holes from the outside so i cant take it apart. I dont want to call a locksmith but it might be my last option as it would probably be cheaper to call a locksmith than kick the door in and have to pay for a new door. It looks like this:
Any advice...even advice about a 24 hr locksmith and price would be helpful 8/24/2008 9:58:50 PM |

im assuming its a key lock and not one of those knobs with just a circular hole on it like bathroom doors 8/24/2008 10:01:11 PM |

honesly, how much sense would it make to have the screws on the outside?
now that i got the flame out of the way, a lock like that should be easy as hell to slip with a credit card. just keep trying, and pull the door toward you while you do it. 8/24/2008 10:01:14 PM |

the credit card wont even make it into the crack its hard to explain but im pretty sure that method wont work, I've tried 8/24/2008 10:02:42 PM |

it will work, you are just doing it wrong. i haven't run across a bedroom door yet that I can't slip with a credit card. shit, i even got into my boss's office at my last job with a credit card.
i would just make sure you use a card that you don't mind getting all bent up, because you will probably have to bend it pretty good to get past the door jam. i always use my old college ID, because it is more flexible than a credit card, has no ridges where the numbers would be, and i don't care if it gets fucked up.

I struggled with the same issue (except no key existed to said door) for about four hours
Just call a locksmith, breaking the door/door frame isn't worth it 8/24/2008 10:04:24 PM |

stick a prybar like this:
inbetween the jamb and the door. You should be able to get enough of a gap to pull the door through if it is just a simple door handle with no deadbolt. You'll atleast get enough to be able to get the latch in the door. If the door won't open enough to clear the latch use a 90* angle pick or something similar to put pressure on the latch to slide into the door. Pretty easy stuff. Just be careful not to put so much force on the jamb that you break the drywall. 8/24/2008 10:06:07 PM |

I've been trying to contact the landlord because im pretty sure he has a spare key but he hasnt called back and im going to be home around midnight. Any advice on locksmith or how much it might cost. Maybe I can call AAA and when they get there say, "i meant door not car" 8/24/2008 10:06:19 PM |

do you have a blockbuster card or another card that is thinner and more flexible than a credit card, but still rigid enough to trip the knob?
fuck, i wish i lived in Raleigh. I would come open it for you for like $20, which is far less than a locksmith will charge for sure 8/24/2008 10:07:27 PM |

does the door open into the room or out to the hallway? i am assuming it opens in, but if it opens out then you have an easy fix 8/24/2008 10:09:56 PM |

if its got a little thing on it to turn like the one picture, just turn it and unlock it
seriously tho, take a card, hotel card works best, and slide it between the door aboveee where the thing is...move it around so you can get it all the way in, pull the card reverse and see if that works
if not, see if the hinges are on the outside and take teh bolts out 8/24/2008 10:18:10 PM |

actually, instead of credit cards, i find that VIC cards and food dog MVP cards work best. little more flexible, yet sufficiently rigid. and i dont give a shit if i fuck it up. 8/24/2008 10:21:27 PM |

if the blockbuster card (my personal fav.) doesn't work, cut a flat piece from a soda or beer can. sometimes works better if you fold it double. 8/24/2008 10:33:40 PM |

I am happy to say i was able to get in but i kind of did a little damage to my door. Its an old door anyway.
The door handle was completely busted after i got done with it so i just switched my bathroom door handle with my room door and everything is good now. The only thing is i might have to paint around the door lock because i kind of splintered the door when i was pushing it real hard. Cutco knife worked like a charm though. 8/25/2008 1:28:23 AM |

I CARE
wtf did you do? When I got locked out of my room like a retard, I ended up taking the plastic business end off of a spatula, bending it to ~90 degrees and basically prying the door out of the jamb or w/e that hole is. The door frame around the bolt area got a little messed up. My attempts at credit carding were unsuccessful . 8/25/2008 2:02:11 AM |
