"MICHAEL PHELPS' DIET

Breakfast: Three fried egg sandwiches; cheese; tomatoes; lettuce; fried onions; mayonnaise; three chocolate-chip pancakes; five-egg omelette; three sugar-coated slices of French toast; bowl of grits; two cups of coffee

Lunch: Half-kilogram (one pound) of enriched pasta; two large ham and cheese sandwiches with mayonnaise on white bread; energy drinks

Dinner: Half-kilogram of pasta, with carbonara sauce; large pizza; energy drinks "

I thought that guy would be eating fruits, vegetables, and whole grains like there is no tomorrow. But it is exactly the opposite!

There are reasons for having that diet... read article to see. But still, damn, that's fucked up!

I guarantee you the average American eats more fat and sodium every day. He just eats a shitload of carbs which is cool when you burn it all off.

Phelps will prob end up being one of the oldest people alive. If he did not eat like that he would prob die of starvation...seriously.

it's not just about calories

he needs tons of carbs for energy, but also a ton of protein to maintain muscle mass

More fat and sodium than a large pizza? Unless this is a handmade pizza, I think not.

Also, check out the sauce he puts on his pasta

For a serving, it probably takes several servings for a pound of pasta.

Duh I know that. I was obviously qualifying the "die of starvation" comment.

If he got 10,000 calories (what he gets now) from healthier healthy sources, he is not going to die. His performance might suffer, but his health would actually improve.

He doesn't have to eat that shit to live (i am talking about quality, not quantity), he has to eat it to perform, but on a microscale, his health suffers every time he eats, even if immeasurably. But if he keeps it up for a long time, it will catch up with him.

As I said, if he ate healthier, he might not be as good, but he would be much healthier.

And therefore,

Quote :
"Phelps will prob end up being one of the oldest people alive. "

is probably not true. Have you ever heard of ex-elite athletes living to beyond 80? Hardly ever happens. The people who live the longest are usually people from small villages in France, China, Japan, Mongolia, Greece, etc. Why? Because they work hard their whole lives without pushing themselves too much, are content, have tons of living descendents, and they eat super-healthy. That's what makes you live long, not being an elite-athlete. I am talking 110+ here, not just till 80.

You REALLY don't think (and the others in here who said if you burn it off it is cool) that all that saturated fat, simple sugars, ultra-refined grain products, LACK OF FRUITS/VEGETABLES/FISH/etc is having an effect on his heart, liver, kidneys, blood, etc?

Sure, the effect is mitigated to some degree because of his career path, but not totally. The harmful effects are cumulative, and one day they might bite him in the ass.

Finally, some people who know their shit... Lewizzle and ShinAntonio.

For the longterm health benefits.

He probably don't care much about that, though.

Personally, I suspect technology will see him through in any case.

I think I exercise like 1-3 hours a day at max, I can't imagine what i'd have to eat to train all day long. especially swimming, it would be ridiculous.

yea, I'm not so sure about that

ever hear of calorie restriction to slow aging? don't you think the opposite would have the opposite effect?

^ look dude. you made a false statement, you lost.

you said there are no ill effects [on health] of eating like that. that is false, ok. and from your post ^ you obviously acknowledge it, but you are tryng to change the topic by saying it doesn't affect his performance.

we all agree with that. but this thread is about the effects on health of a diet like that.

i didn't retract my previous statement

but even if what i said were false, it doesn't change the fact that there's nothing wrong with living for performance and performance alone at this stage of his life

yeah i dont care what kind of physical activity you are doing that stuff is not good for you in such high quantities.

That being said, the long term effects to his health are probably less than the typical american who exercises ~1 time per month and eats ~3 baconators per week, drinks ~3 cokes per day, with 5 cups of coffee.

Obviously he needs sugars, fats, etc but he doesn't need that quantity of saturated & trans fats, sodium, etc

you might want to do some more research before you go spewing off this failed logic. It has been well documented in medical journals that the people who live the longest take in the fewest calories per day, not the people who eat "super-healthy" (whatever you think that means). They can eat pure garbage, as long as they don't eat a lot of it.

Elite athletes tend to live shorter lives because the massive quantities of food they eat speed up the aging process because they are straining their endocrine system and digestive tract trying to process all the food they have to eat to survive.

I'd like to see a source for this. I'm aware calorie count matters, but your the first person I've seen claim it's the only thing.

Take the Okinawans, for example. They supposedly live longer than anyone else. What do they eat? A low-calorie mix of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, soy, and fish.
