So I had a lease ending Aug. 1st at LJM. Around 4:30 I went to the leasing office to request the maintenance guy to give my moving inspection. I still had a little bit of tidying up to day so I asked when they were to closed and was told 6 PM.
Around 5:30 I had finished my cleaning locked up my apartment and went to the office to hand over my keys. Sure enough they decided to go early. Not thinking it a good idea to leave my keys on the door step; i returned the next day to hand them over.
Sure enough I get a notice in the mail at the end of last week saying they were taking amount out of my deposit. I attempted to reconcile this fee after finding out only to be told I should have left the keys under the floormat. I could see it now I leave my keys under the mat some random person finds them during the night trashes my apartment then i get charged $500 in damage and destruction. Supposedly though the woman was giving a tour; yet i remember the "CLOSED- RETURN BY" sign in the 9 AM position to which logical deduction would point to this meaning Saturday morning not 9pm friday night.
The fact remains though. The apartment representative said they were closing at 6 I returned during their stated business hours. They were not there with the "return by" sign set for the next day. I had vacated the apartment. Thus I decided to hold onto my keys till i could assuredly "hand them" to an official. Even if i was trying to "leach" use of my apartment by having the keys i could just as easily had a spare copy made ( the key did not have the "do not duplicate" inscription) and have been squatting w/o them knowing since i could have already turned in my keys. Bullshit is the fact that they are attempting to bullshit me out of $50 in my deposit b.c they did not honor their own posted business policies. 8/25/2008 10:35:40 PM |

LJM ripped me off too. Must be the same or similar management as 3-4 years ago. 8/25/2008 10:59:26 PM |

I bet had i even somehow managed to slip the keys through the cracks of the doors they would have claimed and charged me a $100 fee for "lost keys". 8/25/2008 11:05:01 PM |

i'd had that happen before. they left early and charged me one day's rent out of the deposit.
nothing you can do unless you have evidence and i bet you don't.
should have waited till 6 AND had a video going for the entire 30 mins you would have been there. 8/25/2008 11:07:23 PM |

I just graduated....
but i do pay into the Corning Attorney defense Network...
Although not sure if its worth a lawyer's time over $50. Going to contact the GM for the region. $50 might not be worth a lawyer but it might not be worth it for them to have a disgruntled ex-resident giving bad reviews and talking shit. 8/25/2008 11:12:48 PM |

^^^Just an FYI, if you win in small claims court, they pay for your lawyer's fees and court costs too. 8/26/2008 1:56:51 AM |
