(+) out west - grand fucking canyon. I love the west. (+) front desk hotel work - not some schlupping type porter or custodial job; I have found that I love doing customer service work, and that I'm excellent at it (+) 'rent' is cheap - max $64/mo, depending on which dorm I end get
(-) have to leave two jobs here in Raleigh that I love; one will be here for me whenever I come back; the other may or may not be (and I've only been there a week now) (-) slight pay cut (-) away from bf and cat and friends
If I hadn't just gotten this other job, I would be giving a lot more consideration to taking this job. 8/28/2008 8:25:52 PM |

I applied...in june? I was horribly broke, and getting despondent with trying to find a job I wanted to work, so I decided, fuck it, I'll see about working in a place I'd like to live, at least. I have already turned down a retail job in the everglades, and a nighttime security position at Bryce Canyon. For the retail job...the timing of the term of employment would have left me without anything, when I got back to Raleigh, for a good two or three months. Between that and the complete lack of any kind of facilities ... $8/hr wasn't worth it.
Bryce Canyon had a lot going for it, but my boss begged me to not go, my bf straight up said 'look, I don't want you to go, AND this will delay me proposing to you', and there, I was looking at a late july-nov 1 term of employment - not even long enough to justify going out there. I just had this overwhelming feeling that if I went, I was going to be miserable the whole time. I have gone through so much in my life that I refuse to be unhappy anymore. It is simply not an option.
This GC job will be for as long as I want it to be and in the hospitality field (same as my main job here in Raleigh).

No...
Now I'm doing shit like volunteering a lot, working <3, and getting in shape.
So, while the job search (for a job that may last 4 months, or two years) is geared towards looking good on a resume come graduation...it's also about having a job I enjoy. I'm glad I'm able to not have to take a job out of necessity
^Bah. Fuck old people. Push them off a cliff

why would you want to move away from your live-in bf and friends?
if its just something you want to do, go do it for 6 months and come back
are you just looking for a change of pace or what? this doesn't sound like something you want to do long term. are you just looking to shake things up then go back to raleigh? 8/28/2008 8:42:01 PM |

I guess I didn't make this clear: I've all but decided to not take the job, because of what I have here in Raleigh. It's still this crazy tempting option, though.
I may email them back and say "I'll do this, but starting 9/22 isn't going to work. If you all want me come January, I'll happily stay til either May or August, but I applied quite some time ago, and in the meantime, I've taken a job that is on a semester-by-semester basis"
It would be so kickass to be out there a lot though. Xanterra often lets their employees have a 4day workweek, knowing that many people take the jobs in order to pay for seeing that part of the country. 8/28/2008 8:44:53 PM |

No, he'll be here.
And just because he'd wait doesn't mean I'm willing to forfeit the time with him.
It's not like I enjoy his company so much that I've become a homebody, or anything 8/28/2008 8:49:12 PM |

does it matter if he is willing, lol
if you`re really gonna get married to him, you might want to go do something like that for a little while, especially if you`re going to spend the rest of eternity together
If i`d had an opportunity like that before i moved in and got married in retrospect i would have taken it 8/28/2008 9:00:01 PM |

You should take the job if you are serious about seeing that area (by seeing I mean backcountry hiking, camping and kayak/canoeing). If you mean seeing the area in a tourist/commuter/traveler sense, you will want to blow your brains out after the first week.
There is NOTHING within almost 50 miles of the Grand Canyon. 8/30/2008 1:36:14 PM |

I was very close to selling all my shit, quitting my job, and moving out west as recently as 6 months ago. Even though some stuff has worked out and things are going pretty well right now I still regret not doing it a little bit. 8/30/2008 1:37:41 PM |
