Yeah, because EVERYONE thought the Cards had a chance in '06... it still pisses me off that joke of a team beat the Mets.. but when you have John Maine and Oliver Perez (both of whom weren't even in the big leagues the majority of that season) on the hill for 4 out of 7 games what can you expect.

And anyway, this Mets team is actually really good. If not for the injuries to the bullpen this team would have been right with the Cubs for the best record in the NL. How they are 15 over with the daily atrocity that is the bullpen is beyond me.

Thankfully, we picked up Ayala and Wagner is on the mend. If we can get Heilman out of any significant role and actually rest Duaner Sanchez's fucked up shoulder we will be as strong as anyone in the postseason.

Fuck off dude. You act like the Mets have been the best team in the NL for sometime now and guess what news-flash they aren't. You are just a little too much of a homer. Compare the Cardinals record in the 2000s to the Mets and then come talk to me.

[Edited on August 29, 2008 at 7:59 PM. Reason : The Mets/Sox might both miss the playoffs so it's not really logical to pick them as favorites]

Here's the thing about the Mets...when everyone expects them to win, they find a way to fuck it up (ie 1988,2006,2007)...but when they barely squeak past the competition or are playing from behind for most of the season, they end up surprising you. Not too different from the NY Football Giants.

The Mets never really surprise anyone (unless you're counting '69). They're always just overhyped by their own fans and some NY media. Every year is the year, man, and every year they're either non-factors (most of the last 30+ seasons) or failures on the doorstep (2000, 2006). I say that, of course, being a fan of the most successful chokers of all-time.

Not sure if the White Sox have the starting pitching to make through the ALCS, but they certainly have the bullpen and bats to do it. I like Boston over the Dodgers for the title. The NL always seems to have an overachiever as its World Series rep. And, I'll have to see it to believe with my Cubbies.

i dont know why the Angels wouldnt be the clear favorites...i mean clearly they're the AL favorites and the Cubs are the NL favorites...just seems like most people still regard the AL as the better league, and the Angels are the best team in the AL

I'm sure the Cy Young award that he is about to win will make him feel better...

** I wouldn't mind the Mets playing the Cubs in a 5 gamer. Santana would win Games 1 and 5, so we'd only need to win one other one of the 3 to win the series... Zambrano is a loon and Dempster on the road doesnt scare me. A healthy Harden anywhere, does.

if dempster is pitching in wrigley, he's just as good as any other pitcher in the MLB

Can anyone find the record for most consecutive singles by a player without getting an out/walk?

dunno about singles, but a quick google search suggests someone has hit in 12 consecutive at bats

Quote :
"I found this paragraph while searching for this information - it comes from a summary of the 1952 season.

July 15 - Detroit Tigers first baseman Walt Dropo collects seven consecutive hits over the course of doubleheader against the Washington Senators. Combined with the five consecutive hits he recored on July 14, Dropo establishes the American League and Major League record for consecutive hits in consecutive plate appearances with ten base hits.

So he set the record at 10, although my math tells me that 5 consecutive hits followed by 7 more makes 12, not 10... so I am not 100% sure on this information. But Chick Hafey definitely hit in 10 consecutive at bats back in 1929. There is also the possibility that somebody has had more since then, which I have yet to check out.

edit - the record is definitely 12, I think the paragraph I quoted may have had a typo in it. I found reference to Bernie Williams getting an 11th consecutive hit against Seattle on Aug 17th 2002, which is said to have "fallen one short of the MLB record", so the record is definitely 12 and I think Walt Dropo holds it.

2nd edit - Walt Dropo holds the record at 12, jointly with Pinky Higgins of the Redsox who also had a 12 hit streak in 1938. FINAL ANSWER! NO MORE EDITS! I guess I am "showing my working" at least, that always got extra marks in school!"

Don't thank us. You guys are likely the team we will have to beat if we want to get in. Phillies still have another series against the nats, you guys still have the cubs. If we were to somehow pull off the miracle it would probably be against the mets. Though even if we lose that series and miss the playoffs, I'll still be happy that they made the last few weeks interesting.
