Lucky1 had a seizure yesterday on the way to my house and wrecked his other truck.
(Y'all all know about the wreck that happened in June when he broke his LEFT arm and totaled the Silverado.)
He's never had a seizure before in his life. Someone was following him and watched him just drift from the right lane to the left, and off into the median of 64. Fortunately, it was the 65 mph part outside Apex, and he went right into the 'fence' thing and that stopped him. He has absolutely no recollection of anything after he reset the cruise from 55 to 65, about a mile earlier. The people who saw it got out and checked on him. They saw him seizing in the front seat, then all of a sudden went limp and was out cold for 3 minutes; then came to screaming to be let out of the truck.

The seatbelt partially dislocated his LEFT shoulder, then the EMS came and hauled him to the hospital. While he was there, he raised his left arm and it popped the rest of the way out of joint. He was freaking out because he could see the bone, but it didn't break through the skin. When I got to the hospital (about an hour after it happened), they were putting it back in place. Sent him home last night.

We don't know any details of the seizure just yet. They did a CAT scan yesterday in the ER, and they said they we're pretty positive he had a seizure that caused the wreck. Couldn't really tell anything else though. He's not allowed to drive or swim till he sees a neurologist though, (which we managed to get an appointment for next week!) They'll do an MRI and see what's going on.

^ Thank you.

I'll be keeping him in my prayers.

Seizures are very scary! (my son has them.) For the person having them and the people who witness it. It's awful that it happened while he was driving, but at least he's now receiving medical care. Hopefully, the doctors will have an answer for him. It's actually more frightening when they don't.

Thanks for all your prayers and well-wishes. This time, he's not as injured and out of a vehicle like last time. I drove the truck from the tow lot in Apex to Raleigh today. It runs fine, just needs a little work around the fenders and a water pump.

Thankfully he's ok. He's really sore all over his body today, and his lap really hurts from the seatbelt. I'm thinking the whole body soreness could be from tensing up during the seizure.

I was freaked out to get another call like that because it was such a short time ago that he called from another ambulance. I'm more concerned about the long term issues he could have to deal with.

Another freaky thing is that he can't lift his arm up or it could just fall out of socket again.

^^ I've never seen a seizure before. I kinda wish he had been with me if he was going to have a seizure, but I am so glad that I wasn't in the car with him. Or if I had been, who knows, I may have known what was happening and been able to get the truck pulled over safely. And there's so many questions... like if he had rode home with me instead of driving himself, (I left like 2 hours before he did) would he have had a seizure while sitting on my couch at 3:00?

OH SHIT!!

He's pretty lucky not to have suffered a major injury. I had a friend back in high school who got a seizure while driving (his first seizure) while on a curve and ended up running off the road and flipping several times until his truck came to rest upside side at a gas station. Both him and another friend that was in the truck were severely injured, and he's never recovered from it.

I hope lucky1 gets better and gets that seizure stuff taken care of.

Amen. The seizure would have happened period. And there is nothing that you could have done to really impact the where and when.

in 1997, when i was a freshman at state, living in university towers, i was playing starfox 64 (i was fox, my roomie was slippy) and i told my roomate paul that the game was starting to fuck with my head. I remember a high pitched noise and falling backward and my head hitting the floor. the next thing i remember is being in an ambulance. i couldnt remember my name. it was the first and only seizure of my life. the doctor told me not to drive for a month. they did lots of tests. it sucked ass.

There are a number of 'imbalances' that can lead to seizures. With kids like my son, it often as to do with calcium or sodium imbalances.

Yeah, you're exactly right. I wonder though, if he had been at my house, could he have just fallen asleep and not really known he was having a seizure? Like having one in his sleep, or just falling asleep all of a sudden, not having the shaking, and just waking up later all fine? Or woken up all out of sorts and confused? I just have so many questions because this is brand new to me, I have never in my life seen a seizure, or know anything about them. I can't wait to see the neurologist next week, I have so many questions.

^^ Wow, that's scary. Mike don't remember ANYTHING after he reset the cruise control, which was like 1 - 1.5 miles earlier. He don't remember feeling anything out of the ordinary or closing his eyes... absolutely nothing. I imagine that if it had not caused a wreck, he would probably not believe that anything ever happened at that particular time of that particular day. And his Mom seems to think that they'll not let him drive for a year. He already knows to expect an EEG and MRI... who knows what else.

^ Wow, that seems like something so small causing them for him. But I know everyone's body chemistry is different and some are more sensitive, and such. At least you know what is causing it though, but not after lots of tests and all you've been through lately.

And he's SO nervous because the doctor told him that if he raises his arm at any time in the next couple of weeks it could just fall out of socket again. He's so paranoid about lifting his arm, that he has been doing a great job of leaving it by his side. One of his friends sneezed after having a shoulder out of socket, and the sneeze caused it to fall back out.

good luck

the going theory is that when you're having a seizure, you don't know it...you don't feel it...and it's debated whether or not you feel anything at all. Though seizures look violent, you're considered cold out of commission when it's happening

some people that have a seizure disorder, like epilepsy, can have an aura before the seizure. The aura is a smell, sound or image that always happens before the seizure hits. One lady I spoke with would see halos around people heads. I doubt this is going to be the case for Mike. I'm hoping this is a one time thing for him. I'm on campus all day-everyday, I'll check on him if you want me to

I heart you guys be safe!

^^ it varies for people. The lady had a little time before it happened, about 3-5 mins. She said enough time to tell someone she was going to have a seizure and to sit down. Other auras I heard about are a buzzing/ringing in the ear and one person (this is coming from my EMS instructor) would smell burned coffee, and have a seizure later that day.

Brains are weird things.

I have worked with a child who is epileptic and my son is epileptic.

Some people are warned prior to having a seizure by an aura. And not everyone completely checks out during a seizure. Some people are semi-conscious during them and are very afraid. (That's why it is best for other people to remain calm.) The big danger during most seizures is injuries from falling and choking. When my son seizes, I lay him down on his side and clear his airway. Then start timing the seizure because if it lasts too long, I have to call rescue and administer rectal medication to stop the seizure. And most people after seizures are tired and sore. Before my son was on medication, he was seizing up to several times an hour and sleeping constantly.

Dang scary. I only know that with dogs the only thing you can do is stay there with them to make sure they get out of it ok and reassure them in a calm manner. I don't know how I could handle a human doing that let alone a loved one.

Humans are strange
