Quote :
"Governing was no less contentious than campaigning, at least to begin with. She ended up dismissing almost all the city department heads who had been loyal to Stein, including a few who had been instrumental in getting her into politics to begin with. Some saw it as a betrayal. Stambaugh, the police chief and member of Palin's step aerobics class, filed a lawsuit for wrongful termination, alleging that Palin terminated him in part at the behest of the National Rifle Association, because he had opposed a concealed-gun law the NRA supported. He eventually lost the suit. The animosity spawned some talk of a recall attempt, but eventually Palin's opponents on the City Council opted for a more conciliatory route.

....

Stein says that as mayor, Palin continued to inject religious beliefs into her policy at times. "She asked the library how she could go about banning books," he says, because some voters thought they had inappropriate language in them. "The librarian was aghast." The librarian, Mary Ellen Baker, couldn't be reached for comment, but news reports from the time show that Palin had threatened to fire her for not giving "full support" to the mayor. "

http://www.adn.com/sarahpalin/story/510219.html

Quote :
"City librarian Mary Ellen Emmons will stay, but Police Chief Irl Stambaugh is on his own, Wasilla Mayor Sarah Palin announced Friday. The decision came one day after letters signed by Palin were dropped on Stambaugh's and Emmon's desks, telling them their jobs were over as of Feb. 13.

The mayor told them she appreciated their service but felt it was time for a change. [quote]''I do not feel I have your full support in my efforts to govern the city of Wasilla. Therefore I intend to terminate your employment ...'' the letter said."

....

Both Stambaugh and Emmons publicly supported Palin's opponent, long-time mayor John Stein during the campaign last fall. When she was elected,
Quote :
"Palin questioned their loyalty and initially asked for their resignations. But Stambaugh said he thought any questions had been resolved."

Stambaugh has headed the Wasilla Police Department since it was created in 1993. Before that, he worked 22 years with Anchorage Police Department, rising to the rank of captain before retiring.

Emmons, who has been the city's library director for seven years, would not comment about the affair.

"Some" could mean 5%.

"Inappropriate language" could mean Kurt Vonnegut's "Slaughterhouse Five."

Stop being a fucking moron.

^^^I don't have a list of the books, but I'm sure it included Burroughs, Joyce, Nabokov, etc.

strong-arming
1. using physical force or coercion against

firing people is coercion.

Find me one democrat who wants to ban the Bible from public libraries.

Libraries are a depository of information and you'll be hard pressed to find anyone on the left wanting to ban any book from a library, let alone one of the most influential in western history.

Threatening to take away someone's job is coercion against that individual.

This is just evidence that Sarah Palin abuses her authority over people.

why dont you just admit that strong arming is not the right term to apply to this instance instead of trying to get into semantics arguments about an online dictionary definition entry

how bout this definition? is this clear enough for you?

Quote :
"strong-arm
Adjective
Informal involving physical force or violence: strong-arm tactics "

if it didnt imply violence, it wouldnt be strong arming...it would simply be non violent coercion

I read the first column, it seemed like a hatchet job on Palin. They only quoted people who were obviously very critical of Palin, including the former mayor and editor of the newspaper. An impartial source would have looked at the both sides rather than simply repeating campaign innuendo from former enemies.

I can't put too much stock in any piece that is so obviously biased. She tried to ban books, says the former mayor whose ass she kicked. Oh really? Which books? This is shoddy journalism.
