to my gmail account

i tried to live with it, but 150mb is not nearly enough, especially compared to almost 7 gigabytes.

i think i'm going to keep using my ncsu address, though - e.k@ncsu.edu sounds much better than emkinney@gmail.com

informal poll: who else has done this?

yeah, i finally sucked up and did it before the semester started. i got tired of having to clean out my inbox 3x a semester because of all the powerpoints for class (which should be kept til the final exam, duh)

i was also getting tired of having 3 email accounts on the today screen of my phone

i think anyone could download the university email addresses from the ldap server or so said my friend, spammers dont have to guess your email address

http://www.ldap.ncsu.edu/usage.php

my friend had it setup on mozilla thunderbird so he could find any ncsu email address

yeah we don't require you to bind to do simple ldap lookups

which is quite unfortunate

anonymous ldap binding is never a good idea

E-mail. Why is it a "situation?"

i mean, yeah - i could (and have) live(d) with 150mb.

i'm one of those people that doesn't like to delete things, though.

it just seems like at a university like nc state that's so focused on technology, we'd have more than 350mb to allocate between our afs space/windows profile/imap box. i know storage is expensive, but still...

i'd buy more space, but $20 setup is ridiculous first of all (i know from past experience that it just takes a couple of clicks to do this in the first place).. and $1.80 for 100mb? jeezus.

how are things over at OIT? saw you got a promotion a while back. gg.

so i'll take off my IT hat just for a moment, so please don't interpret this in any official way.

my problem with this argument is the fact that you're asking an educational institution to keep up with commercial entity. okay, fine, maybe not to the same scale as Gmail, but the underlying assumption i hear over and over is "X is doing it, why can't NCSU?" NCSU can't keep up with Google because it doesn't have all that cash to throw at the problem, AND it has other priorities besides IT needs.

the way you get more storage space is to cut other services, or ask for additional $$ to fund storage initiatives. what would you pick?

yeah, i know... but other universities are doing it as well, not just commercial entities. i would never expect to have seven gigabytes of space for my unity account.

believe me - i understand exactly what you're saying - i wear a SAN admin hat as one of my duties at work, and this is always an issue. everyone always wants more space (and, coincidentally, the majority of users that ask for said space almost never fully use it, heh).

assuming 30,000 students, at 350MB each, that's a little over 10 terabytes... and that doesn't even include faculty and staff. i know it would be a huge undertaking to increase capacity. no one's expecting a change overnight - but maybe it could be worked into the budget little by little?

Why would you even make this thread?

^^ that's because ECU is an almost exclusively Microsoft campus. most of our back-end infrastructure for e-mail and web hosting has been Unix or Linux based for as long as Eos/Unity has existed.

I did this back around spring break of last year, haven't looked back. I also put an NCSU label on everything sent to my @ncsu address just in case I wanted to sort them somehow.
