If you had to pick one?

I can't decide where I lean. My sister's boyfriend asked me for a good read, I tossed him Ender's Game and now I think he's on Xenophobia. I do think that perhaps Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy might be too liberal but still, that book is hilarious.

Hitchhiker's Guide is funny, but sometimes all the funniness gets in the way of the story. I like some humor in my sci-fi/fantasy, but I don't like it to be overwhelmed by it.... that's the main reason I can't get into Pratchett.

Hitchhiker's all the way. It's more entertaining and funnier and picks on life's foibles in a much more intelligent and hilarious way. Both are fantastic, though.

If I had to pick based on my love for the authors, Hitchhiker's would kick the shit out of Ender's, because Douglas Adams is my hero while Card is a wacky mormon conservative who I disagree with in every way in real life. I do love his books, though.

This "Hitchhiker's is Liberal" thing makes me laugh. First, the book was written by a British author whose political affiliations would mean nothing in the U.S. He was a "liberal democrat," but so is Tony Blair, so...

He was an atheist and an environmental conservationist, though, and those beliefs shine through very clearly in his books, especially after "Restaurant"

But really, if I had to suggest an Adams series, I might suggest the Dirk Gently books over Hitchhiker's. Not because one is better - it'd be impossible to say which is - but because it's more consistent and brings the funny and the awesome so very very well.

Damn, I miss that guy.

It's actually funny to think about the fact that we're comparing two very different scifi books by two authors whose viewpoints on life are about as diametrically opposed as you can get, but I can honestly say I love both series very much.

Still gotta go with my boy Doug, though.

By the way, if you've never read (or listened to) Last Chance to See, please do. I only say listen as a supplement to the reading, because it's read by Adams himself, and hearing his emotion really makes me love him even more.
