as we know it happens tomorrow

Quote : | "Fears have emerged that the collider could produce black holes that could suck up anything around them -- including the whole Earth. Such fears prompted legal actions in the U.S. and Europe to halt the operation of the Large Hadron Collider, alleging safety concerns regarding black holes and other phenomena that could theoretically emerge" |
some scientists say that the collider could very well create black holes, but not enough to do anything
but others are saying that the small black holes would overtime develop, taking about 50 months to develop into an earth swallowing catastrophe- and that should put it around November of 2012... anyone a little superstitious of the predicted end of the world by the Mayans?9/9/2008 10:01:35 AM |

^^^yeah, i rarely go to the lounge anymore
in reality, i'm not too worried about this- hell, before they dropped the first atom bomb, there were scientists who were worried that it would set off a chain reaction that would vaporize the entire atmosphere

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fermi_paradox
Quote : | "It is the nature of intelligent life to destroy itself
Technological civilizations may usually or invariably destroy themselves before or shortly after developing radio or space flight technology. Possible means of annihilation include nuclear war, biological warfare or accidental contamination, nanotechnological catastrophe, ill-advised physics experiments,[28], a badly-programmed super-intelligence, or a Malthusian catastrophe after the deterioration of a planet's ecosphere. This general theme is explored both in fiction and in mainstream scientific theorizing.[29] Indeed, there are probabilistic arguments which suggest that humanity's end may occur sooner rather than later. In 1966 Sagan and Shklovskii suggested that technological civilizations will either tend to destroy themselves within a century of developing interstellar communicative capability or master their self-destructive tendencies and survive for billion-year timescales.[30] Self-annihilation may also be viewed in terms of thermodynamics: insofar as life is an ordered system that can sustain itself against the tendency to disorder, the "external transmission" or interstellar communicative phase may be the point at which the system becomes unstable and self-destructs.[31]
From a Darwinian perspective, self-destruction would be a paradoxical outcome of evolutionary success. The evolutionary psychology that developed during the competition for scarce resources over the course of human evolution has left the species subject to aggressive, instinctual drives. These compel humanity to consume resources, increase longevity, and to reproduce — in part, the very motives that led to the development of technological society. It seems likely that intelligent extraterrestrial life would evolve similarly and thus face the same possibility of self-destruction. And yet, for species self-destruction to provide a good answer to Fermi's Question, it would have to be very nearly universal. That is, this possibility would have a probability of very nearly 1.0. It has been suggested that a successful alien species would be a superpredator, as is Homo sapiens.[32]
This argument does not require the civilization to entirely self-destruct, only to become once again non-technological. In other ways it could persist and even thrive according to evolutionary standards, which postulates survival as the sole goal of life - not "progress," technology or even intelligence." |
FWIW, i see this as a very real outcome to our "intelligence" (self-destruction, i mean)

On one of those Nat Geo or discovery shows about doomsday there was a thing similar to this that caused black holes and huge storms that wiped out the world. They had a pretty cool story line and showed airplanes being sucked into the hole. I wonder if it was this they were basing it on? Cause it's the first I've heard of it. Yet I don't pay much attention to things like this.
anyone else seen that show i'm talking about? wish i could remember where it was or what it was called. 9/9/2008 10:56:22 AM |
