so i'm trying to get my computer up and working now - downloading drivers i need and stuff

every time i download any driver file and run it, CRC checks fail - this has happened with internet explorer and firefox, from multiple providers' websites - creative, logitech, canon, etc.

a few things get by without a problem, like the firefox installation exe, but everything else is being corrupted somehow

any ideas?

read some google responses from people but nothing really applies to me
1) UAC is disabled
2) my account is the admin account
3) internet connection is hard-wired to the router

gonna try reinstalling the network drivers

who made your NIC

broadcom nics have a lot of problems with tcp lso/cso and vista/2008 x64, try turning off the TOE

fuck it thinks everything is corrupt somehow

i downloaded the driver for the NIC from asus's website on another PC and brought it over on a jump drive. i tried extracting the contents on my computer, but it says it's corrupt. so then i went back to the other pc and tried extracting contents there, and it went off without a problem.

so then i tried installing WinRAR with a known good copy of the installation file - the desktop thinks that file is corrupt too.

i didn't even download that one - it was on a hard drive of mine.

It sounds like what my computer was doing when the RAM was bad. Try running one of the various memtest apps out there.

It could be a bad HD too, but this has other ways that it would also manifest itself (very slow file transfers, etc.).

yeah i don't think it's a bad HD because i just re-organized a bunch of data at pretty decent speeds

running windows memory diagnostics right now

Just for the sake of being thorough, do you have an option to "Run as administrator" if you right-click on any of the driver installer files? I've seen the need to do that with Symantec antivirus products on Vista because of a similar issue, although it may not be an issue since you have UAC turned off.

tried to install xp from a good DVD i've used before and that said installation files are corrupt too
