Raleigh, N.C. — One young man died in a wreck after he and another man took a car on a bicycle trail along Leesville Road early Thursday, police said.

Investigators said that the two men went joyriding on the bike trail and struck a utility pole around 2:30 a.m. One man died, and the second was taken to a local hospital.

Leesville Road, between Lynn and Ray roads, will likely be closed until noon while crews complete repairs. A detour will be established, but motorists should avoid the area if at all possible, urged Jim Sughrue, a spokesman for Raleigh police.

The wreck caused limited power outages in the area. Progress Energy reported that it had more than 325 customers in Raleigh without power. Service should be restored by 10:15 a.m.

Crews must wait until a new pole can be brought in before reopening the road.

The damaged utility pole connects to two man feeder lines, so it can not be cut down without shutting off electricity to 8,000 customers and stop lights at several major intersections."
