naw i'm keeping an eye on him, not letting him get to the other half the living room until we clean it up and remove all the little boxes for him to get lost in

he really wants over to the area with the boxes, and under the recliner so i've got to keep a close eye on him, but hes so damned adoreable, he'll occasionally gets stuck in a boot and have to topple the boot over to get out

New ferret = GREAT FUN!

They just run around like mad and fall over themselves trying to explore everything. It's amazing.

named him indiana jones, because of his affinity for shiny objects, penchant for getting into and out of trouble, his aversion to snakes(assumed from size), and his love of exploring dark areas

i'm thinking i might try just putting him on his leash and teathering him to the entertainment center

anyone got any ideas for breaking him from biting and rattling his cage, i've been just spraying him with a can of compressed air and saying no, but i feel this isn't negative enough reinforcement to make him stop

But good name anyway.

he really doesn't smell that bad, no worse than having a cat or dog

People tend to react differently to the ferret smell... I didn't mind it when I first got mine and I stopped being able to smell it at all after a week or so. Other people seem to notice it and react as though they smell foul, though. To me it's just neutral... not a good or bad smell, just a smell.

yeah, after living with cats and dogs, i didn't really find this smell foul, i barely notice it anymore, only when i come in from being away for a while

The get annoyed/fidgety on a leash. They lose all the playful fun and just focus on getting out of the thing. Especially try not to use a leash the first time you expose a ferret to a room... it kind of makes them weird in that room from then on.

The solution to keep mine from exploring where I didn't want was to just close most of the doors in the house, especially in rooms with a lot of boxes or open ducts. The most important thing is to never, EVER let a ferret into the same room as your washer/dryer.

A good way to train them to roam openly around is to only give them access to one room at first, then when they seem okay there, open up more areas.

I always thought they stunk.
And their meat is greasy as hell. It's like eating a possum, but worse.

Mine lived to be 7, and from everything I've heard/read they tend to die from medical issues more than other pets... with cats/dogs, they get old and just seem to die naturally of old age, but ferrets can live to be 10 or more if they manage not to get one of the many diseases or organ complications that can affect them.

They are fun to screw with though, especially if you're wearing welding gloves. That ferret we had hated me so much. We'd open the cage and he'd run across the room to sink his teeth into me. If I'd bend too low he would go for the veins in my neck. Wonderfully ferocious.

my sister got hers trained enough to go outside and play. It hides under the deck and runs up the gutters. It found a mouse one time and then it killed and ate the mouse. My sister now knows what ferreting is. The ferret has the run of the house, it's awesome seeing it boss around the two dogs. Good luck with the ferret you need pics!
