Is there some sort of new rule/component in the bcs that punishes playing cupcakes? it seems like all of a sudden this year everyone is playing a tough schedule. Look all around. ECU starting with 2 ranked teams. USC playing @uva and playing ohio state. Wisconsin going to Fresno. Even teams like Cal piling up playing Tenn and Maryland. NCSTATE playing south carolina and south florida. . Florida and Miami getting back together. More non conference power matchups than I can ever remember and this is all just the first few weeks.

Is there anything behind this?

the component being strength of schedule probably, but its not a new rule

lesser teams just plan for it better

It isn't like the games were scheduled over the summer. No new rule would impact this seasons schedule.

yea. '99 we played and beat south carolina, miami, wvu, & state. that was the last time this actually looked impressive & it showed in the polls. beating vt, wvu, & 2 other acc teams this season will make for a great history repeat but they're not the teams that worry me.. it's fuckin UAB or a vengeful UCF. at any rate, Skip's plan is working... we're not just playing the big boys; were beatin em

ECU no longer schedules william & mary

the answer to everything you said is "no"

you realize these schedules are made usually 5 years in advance

^^ok well what happened 5 years ago to make people say "hey, lets start playing big games in five years from now"

uva may seem like a cupcake for usc but its a big time game in place of playing idaho or or some type of directional state university.

[Edited on September 15, 2008 at 10:27 AM. Reason : hell, ohio state was the easiest game for their d in years]

I think they do it more to get national attention and build prestige for the program... of course you have to expect to win a few of those games. It worked out quite nicely for ECU this year don't you think? 3-0 against cupcakes = no buzz for your team; 3 - 0 against real teams where two teams have a history of being ranked = people paying attention.
