being a successful developer requires constant learning on the go whether you have 0 experience or 20 years experience. if you are able to learn quickly and be able to apply what you learn, you'll be fine

[Edited on September 15, 2008 at 12:51 AM. Reason : ability to work well with others is often also critical, depending on the nature of the job]

You get hired.
You'll write crappy code as you learn.
You'll stay until something better comes along.
You'll leave, and the company will be stuck maintaining your crappy code, which they cannot do.
They'll hire someone else to clean up after you.
Lather, rinse, repeat.

i've worked in web design/app development for several years now, hired completely off of my experience in HIGH SCHOOL

frankly, it's boring as hell and i don't like it, but it's what pays the bills and allows me to do grad school (in the field i'm actually interested in)

that said, it drives me batshit nuts to see sloppy code...i may have no formal training, but holy crap there are some awful coders out there

please buy a book on proper software development theory and learn why you should do what you end up doing. anyone can be a code monkey, but being a programmer entails knowing why you did it the way you did.
