he was instrumental in *very* early Floyd, but i don't think he had much of an impact on the songwriting of what most people think is "classic Floyd"

Eh, he had a big part in Dark Side of the Moon, of course he wasn't as influential in the band as Waters or Gilmore, but his influence was more along the instrumental side, which is one of Pink Floyd's defining marks.

I disagree wholeheartedly. Musically speaking, I thought he was one of if not the most talented member of the group...even over Gilmore. Granted, he wasn't some lyrical genius but he didn't need to be...that band had PLENTY of songwriters.

I think the keys in Pink Floyd songs had everything to do with making their quintessential sound and everything to do with their success. From significant keys on songs like Echoes, Shine on, Welcome to the Machine, to actually writing Great Gig in the Sky and Us and Them (some of what makes DSOTM so damn good)....he was fantastic. Granted, he didn't have much at all to do with the Wall but we all know the story behind that.
