Look guys, it's Safety Preparedness Awareness Overly Cautious Paranoia month! Stock up on your plastic wrap and duct tape!
Oh wait now we care about this demographic. And now this one. And now we like the world this month, and then we like this demographic this month, and this month is dedicated to scat porn and blahblahblah. Shit's too complicated. 9/15/2008 11:08:02 PM |

Nobody gives a shit, snewf. I'm equating it to pointless bullshit that doesn't interest me, because naming a month "so and so month" generally seems to be a meaningless gesture aimed at pleasing some small portion of the general public in some way or the other. I equate its usefulness to that of a candlelight vigil which we hold every time a white girl who knows more than 300 people (and has boobs and a nice face) dies.
Also, I am the fucking monster here. Because having months dedicated to minorities seems like a lousy PR move that makes politicians wet their pants with anticipation. Oh boy, we can please this minority group and claim this month in the name of the Republicrats and live on forever in e-fame on wikipedia! Then they will all see that only the republicrats truly care about their special interests (which are different from the rest of the populace, clearly) and they'll vote for us in the next erection!
Pandering is pandering is bullshit.

Mindstorm All American 15858 Posts user info edit post |
And I'm not dissing candlelight vigils. For spiritual and religious purposes it's nice for a community to show support for a family/loved neighbor/somebody by holding such a vigil. When tens of thousands of people do it because some event was perpetuated by the news media nationwide, and people do such a thing even though they don't know said person/family, it waters down the meaning behind having such a vigil. About as meaningless as spending $1 and getting a livestrong bracelet. Go donate $20 to a cause instead and don't go wearing a bracelet on your arm with a shit-eating grin on your face like it means you care.
There's a number of things I'm grumpy about like this. I'm like one of those people on the internet. 9/15/2008 11:53:02 PM |

I don't go out of my way in any federally-sanctioned cultural awareness month/holiday to go and find links about stuff pertaining to that holiday. I don't care. Why should I care? It's not like I'm unable to stomach the thought that people of all races are capable of creating things, making history, or being significant in some way. I don't see the point in encouraging people to focus on historical figures, historical events, or great inventions in the context of the race of the person who accomplished said event/build said device/etc. It gives individuals of that race an opportunity to feel special about that month because a few TV channels are running advertisements that give you a 30 second blurb about an individual of race X who is special for so and so reason. They get to feel slightly more special when the handful of TV specials (in the relative sea of television garbage) pop on for an hour talking in more detail about people from said race. How does that spread cultural awareness?
If the government wanted to spread cultural awareness they can do it through the existing public school system by having increased standards for history education (and by dumping money into education funding to support it).9/16/2008 12:04:13 PM |

^ I'm not saying most people decide to learn more during the month, but I'm sure some do. That's advertising. If it didn't have effect, it wouldn't used constantly. Doesn't make the month cost effective or anything, but you shouldn't deny it. 9/16/2008 12:11:00 PM |

Uh, the Hispanics remain disadvantaged in this country. Many are mestizos, with considerable Amerindian blood. The United States oppressed the hell out of Amerindians historically.9/16/2008 12:20:00 PM |

Are we assuming the audience for these advertisements believes that people from minority X are incapable of doing anything significant with their lives because of their race? There's no other reason to pander to their ignorance. If this were the case, we'd be better off educating people in the first place (in the public schools we're already paying for) that people of all races are capable of inventing things simply by making sure to cover all the bases as far as inventors and historical figures go. There'd then be no need to pander to masses of ignorant fools who believe race Y totally rules compared to race X because race X is filled with a bunch of flatheaded bottom-feeders that sleep with their sister.9/16/2008 12:28:06 PM |
