I was ok with it

until I saw The Blair Witch Project

then I was not ok with it any longer

eventually, I came to accept it again

then Cloverfield came out

and I wanted to shoot myself in the head all over again

see today I was given my midterm for one of my classes

I have to make a film using only still photographs that I take, editing techniques and a soundtrack which I will be recording and composing

I think since the readings have been theorizing on the role of photography that I should pay some respect to the photographer's point of view

so I've decided on a short POV zombie horror

Do you really have to compose your own music?

I had to do a project exactly like that. I did a film about a man who suddenly, through some sort of strange metamorphosis, becomes the sun.

we have to record our sound effects
composing the sound track is only recommended... but the next floor up is the College of Jazz

I may not personally compose mine but it will have an original soundtrack

I've always been a fan of zombie movies and POV has been used more and more in the genre

there's some POV sniper footage in 28 Weeks Later

and Romero's new Diary of the Dead is entirely POV

I think POV with any sort of action would be boring.

Unless, you did it as a slide-show instead of a style like La Jetee.

Think, "found footage." What if there was a zombie apocalypse, and then humanity recovered afterwards? People searching for survivors find a ruined apartment with a badly damaged digital camera. On it are still images that show the horror that four people endured when attempting to survive the night.

hmm I like the slide show idea

I am wanting to do photos "sourced" from a variety of cameras

stills from a security cam and from a webcam

my response to the action would be to do most of it offscreen

but I'm considering an omniscient soundtrack

That'd work.

Make it look like it's some genuine thing like Cloverfield did

Something like "FBI Recovered Footage. Still photos of Incident #00343"

see I'm not sure what I want the source to be

is it archived footage? if then it has been curated so there is some sort of editor or censor inherent in the narrative

I was thinking maybe the source would be the agenda-less and immoral recordings of an automated system

just do zombie photos over incredibly creepy ambient music

music like this http://beksinski.pl/

fuck that would be scary

I've gotta have a narrative structure

how do you feel about an omniscient soundtrack?

like sound effects indicating movement and action existing beyond the scope of the still photos

Llike a beginning middle and end?

I mean, it could work with the story I presented.

"Hi we've found this apartment yayyy"

"hey look zombies"

"holy fuck we're all dyin"

"the end"

I don't think I've ever used that, but it could work.

haha true

I think if my violence is gratuitous it won't come across well though because I haven't the budget for it

like it will lose its impact

-oh I also don't want any dialogue

But since they're stills you can work on them in photoshop

make them grainy, add blood effects, etc.

I don't mean dialogue, I was just indicating the narrative direction.

yeah the photoshop thing is pretty much required

I'm going to make them look like they come from a variety of sources

but I do think I'm going to shoot my webcam footage with a webcam

Make sure you don't do something that looks TOO similar to what they did in the end of Dawn of the Dead. It was similar to:

Quote :
"Think, "found footage." What if there was a zombie apocalypse, and then humanity recovered afterwards? People searching for survivors find a ruined apartment with a badly damaged digital camera. On it are still images that show the horror that four people endured when attempting to survive the night."

Basically short video clips they took of their little journey at the end of the movie before they encountered a few nasty zombies. I am terribly interested by the idea of first person zombie movies though. Think how fucking crazy it could be if it was from the point of view of somebody who woke up to zombies busting through their window and their first reactions and such (or maybe their first person view of being eaten alive/killed by a zombie and becoming one themselves).

I need not encourage people to make stuff like this though. I like zombie movies, even though they cause me to lose sleep at night when they're exceptionally well done.

what scares you about them?

is it the (albeit anticipated) surprise of the everyday becoming threatening?
