for example

I have the option of doing my entire MA program online through my school (The New School)

I am not doing that because I feel that I'd be cheating myself of access to the faculty and facilities which is why I moved to NY and am paying all this money

however, I may take a semester online and live outside of the city to save money, travel more, intern in a less competitive environment and be with my girlfriend

the only thing is, online courses cost the same amount of money - the only thing I'm saving on is Student Health fees really... and I'll probably spend that money on buying some equipment that I'll need to continue my work

No, but it depends on what your goals are.

If your employer is offering to pay for you to take online classes at some random "university" in order to earn a promotion, then fuck yeah, those shits are credible. That's money in the bank. Someone who has children or an adult dependent in their life could really benefit from that.

But if you're a free-wheeling twenty-something, there's no reason for you to be considering an online university. Traditional universities have tons of scheduling options now. There are lots of online courses available to self-motivated, independent learners.

And just to re-emphasize, online universities for the most part are not credible. At their worst, they are straight up con jobs where "administrators" end up in prison for fraud.

Community college is a good place to start. It's probably cheaper than an online university.

next best thing is to do a program in an on-line university accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC), which is recognized by the US Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

^, ^^ The only accrediting body that is recognized the US Department of Education is the DETC.

http://www.detc.org

Here is their latest list, and University of Phoenix is NOT on there.

It started as a fully distance univ, but now has some campuses. But do they actually teach in the traditional sense on those campuses, or are they just for student services and tutoring help?
