Quick background: laid off early July, interviewed with two companies in August (very similar positions). Company A is privately owned, and only in NC/SC. Company B is an int'l corporation with offices all over the world. I have friends that work at the NYC branch of Co B. Company A made an offer right away, Company B said they might not hire for the position till Dec/Jan. I needed a job for financial reasons so I accepted the position with Co A.

Anyway I've been working for Co A for 3 weeks (on a 90 day probationary period) and its going well, everyone's nice and its cool. Well today I got an offer on the phone from Company B (will get offer in writing tomorrow). Its for 7500 more (though should get 5k bonus from Co A in 2 months). Company B offers a lot more vacation time and better overall benefits. Company B is also 7 miles closer to where I live. Company B said I can start as early as Monday.

I've got a good thing going, but it looks like I can improve my situation considerably. As always I'm curious for the opinion of TWW. Suggestions, advice?

Company B

I would also wrangle with this decision, were I you, but
1) you have more than just a reason or two to switch
2) you haven't been at company A long enough to really owe them anything, have a sense of loyalty, or for them to have become truly reliant on you

logistically, for you, B is better

but leaving A so early may make you look like a quitter or something on a future resume

I'm assuming B is publicly traded right? When it comes to layoffs, the newest guys are let go first. Just an idea, but that's a tough call.

Goes without saying, but I wouldn't recommend going to A with a counteroffer. Also I wouldn't hesitate to omit A from your resume if you're only there 3 weeks.

Would you do 2 weeks notice?

I figured by posting in Chit Chat I'd get serious and comical error. Its mostly working, but DNL's comments are lame. Sorry bud, make me laugh!

I don't think I'd give two weeks notice. I'm training, there's no point lol.

He can be fired at the end of 90 days.. why can't he quit before the end of 90 days? The 90 days probationary period is there for a reason and IMO it's not just for employers.. employees can use it to their advantage too.

You don't have to put everything on the resume. Just leave that job out and tell them that after you were laid off from your last job you found temporary employment to pay the bills until you got an offer from somewhere you really wanted to work.

No you are correct, that was me. Once I plopped myself back down in Raleigh I didn't pursue that job lead very seriously, and my buddy didn't push it or really get back to me about it. So I found a few good positions here.

Probably going to accept tomorrow. The manager hiring me took the day off but gave me his cell and home number.

one thing you guys need to remember, especially about real jobs:

if you got a paycheck from them, there's gonna be record of you working there... and your employer can find record of it without a lot of effort

i wouldn't try to cover it up, you're gonna get called on it eventually.

It's in your best interests to go with Company B. like someone said before, you haven't been with A long enough to really owe them anything, and if you have signed up for any training with Company A, cancel it immediately. Plus, that $5k bonus Company A offered will seem like nothing over the long haul making $7500 more with Company B. You will also have vastly more resources at your disposal with a multinational company (human, software, equipment, access, etc) than with a privately owned company operating only in a limited area.

Id stick to A....b/c if company B is as huge as you say they are, then more then likely they'll be intersted in you 6 months to a year from now if you become unhappy.

Good working environment, and good benefits outweigh pay for me in 75% of situations.

Sounds like everyone's saying B anyway... so tell your boss at A about it. You never know, you might get a 30% raise in your first month with A.

^true. I'm going to bring it up with the owner of the company after I have something in writing from company B to cover my ass.

Easy call. Go to B, leave A off your resume, don't bother with that counteroffer shit (you will be damaged goods). People saying "bad form" are fucking stupid -- companies don't care about you and would not hesitate to do the same to you in a financial crunch.

I am accepting the position with Company B. I start on Monday the 13th and will be filling out all the forms they want me to this week (including offer acceptance).

I'm not saying a word to Company A till Friday afternoon. Then I'll politely tell them I'm peacing out.
