"Man Successfully Used a $200 bill

Posted: Jun. 1, 2007 10:55 a.m.
Updated: Aug. 6, 2007 2:26 a.m.

HALIFAX COUNTY: North Carolina cops are searching for a guy who successfully passed a $200 bill bearing George W. Bush's portrait and a drawing of the White House complete with lawn signs reading "We like ice cream" and "USA deserves a tax cut." The phony Bush bill was presented to a cashier at a Food Lion in Roanoke Rapids on September 6 by an unidentified male who was seeking to pay for $150 in groceries. Remarkably, the cashier accepted the counterfeit note and gave the man $50 change. In a separate incident involving a different perp, Roanoke Rapids cops Tuesday arrested Michael Harris, 24, for attempting last month to pass an identical $200 Bush bill at a convenience store.

on the flipside, i've had a cashier refuse to take a $2 bill, claiming it was counterfeit. although counterfeit was probably too many syllables for her, so i'm sure she said fake.

anyway, the manager happened to be nearby and overheard it, chewed her out for being an idiot, and they took my $2 bill.

You would not believe the retarded people who work as cashiers sometimes

Can't really blame the man for trying and then getting away with it. I don't know how he didn't bust out laughing for the remainder of the transaction.

I LOVE getting $2 bills and $1 coins as change from the Post Office. It's always awesome to spend them at a convenient store and watch the cashiers get all confused.

Yes, this was national news, and it's happened once before in Roanoke Rapids, too, during my Junior year of HS. There was a rumor that the cashier then was a chick that graduated with me. And she wasn't foreign... she was actually in half of my AP classes, although I'm not really sure how the hell she got in.

I didn't hear about it happening again last year... but then again, my parents don't tell me much about dumbass things at home, because Dad wants me to STOP hating that town so much. (Never gonna happen)

I don't see why this is illegal.

It's not really counterfeiting...the bill is obviously fake to anyone who looked at it, so if the cashier chose to accept it, why should the customer be penalized?

when I was a cashier in high school, the people I worked with always took pride in being able to spot phony bills. When you're handling money all day, it's pretty easy to tell the difference in texture between a real and fake bill. We saw counterfeit money way more often than most places, so that might've helped

What about 50 cent coins? I have only seen one of those my entire life, when I was working as a cashier in high school. Those things are huge.

So does anyone know why some bills are so less common than others like that?

o wait they still make them

Production of the note is quite low; approximately 1% of all notes currently produced are $2 bills.

Oh okay I didn't know that they stopped making them. I thought they only started making $2 bills in like the mid 90s anyway?

i think that's basically how they train bank employees to spot it.

We have two $2 bills in our cruise jar, one from each of us that got it as a younger person and kept it until we decided the cruise was way more important than keeping them.
