So I just got DirectTV last week. Things I've learned & questions:

* They don't get channel 10 Raleigh TV public access
* Is PBS not in HD? Nova recorded in SD.
* I think I need a land-line telephone line to buy pay-per-view with the remote? wtf?

If you care about PBS, you should have ordered Dish...at least you would have access to their OTA channel through your DVR. The current DirecTV DVR doesnt offer OTA access.

If you have a network jack on the back, you can plug it into your router and do the same thing possible. I know I can do this with Dish.

if you have the HD DVR there's an OTA addon (AM21) you can purchase for like 50 bucks.

Or you can try to get a customer service rep to trade you for an HR20

not sure why you would have expected a local public access channel to appear on a satellite provider?

As for PBS, it should be coming in HD sooner rather than later. DTV has been in talks to start carrying them for awhile now as part of the HD locals.

^they said "all my local channels" and i asked the girl on the phone "even public access?" and she said yes.

^^yea, that's what i want. pretty weak that i have to pay $50 for it, when i won't even own it.

get a qam tuner and snag pbs hd and all your other locals that way, assuming you still have cable internet. I dont pay twc anything and still get all my locals in HD on qam for when my signal isn't good.

On DTV's fine print, it says some channels may require an antenna or something like that. Which means you'd need an antenna.

you can get a free antenna from WRAL if you have recently purchased DTV or a new TV

I asked the installer to make sure I got an HR20 when he was installing. Usually the installers have both on the truck.

hmm, so with the tuner, i still won't be able to DVR Nova... so i'm slowly coming to terms with DirecTV not being the perfect provider. At least it'll be a lot cheaper than TWC for a few months.

^^Thanks!
