aight so heres the deal. The wireless at my parents house was working perfectly fine friday night. Nobody got on the internet at all till sat night and it didnt work then. Normally unplugging the dsl modem and router then plugging them back in fixes this problem. Well it didnt this time. I can get on the internet by ethernet cable off a port on the back of the router but as soon as I try to do wireless on it. its a no go. I tried reseting the entire router(thru the software and pressing and holding the reset button on back) and setting it back up, still didnt work.

It is a Linksys WRT54G ver 6 router. it lets me(and all the other computers in the house) connect to it, but it takes a lot longer then normal on the "aquiring network address" part of connecting. Once its connected sometimes it will say it has limited or no connectivity, other times it connects and acts like its gonna work. But then I have no internet. It wont go anywhere online at all.

Please lemme know what you think because I gotta get this fixed before I come back to Raleigh today

right now, im agreeing with you because this router has always been a pain to me, unlike the buffalo with DDWRT that i got from synapse...

But does anybody have any clue for what I can do to troubleshoot this and fix it?

I have a box in my closet full of broken linksys routers.

Best buy has an off brand for $34.99 that will probably outlast any linksys POS.

I've had problems with my routers not handling the DNS requests properly - even when the router is set to use OpenDNS. I just manually configred all of my computers to use opendns and it hasn't been a problem.

On another note for whoever, which buffalo router is generally considered the best one (range included) to use with DD-WRT?

yeah, linksys sucks major donkey balls these days

my $25 buffalo running tomato blows the crap out of any consumer wireless router under $100, hands down

i don't know what to suggest, other than ditching the linksys firmware and loading up dd-wrt micro onto it...the micro version works just fine, it just doesn't have as many features...it's significantly more stable than the stock firmware

the earlier versions of 54G were better and quite a bit more stable than the latter versions. dunno why, but that's been my experience.

linksys firmware IS shitty though.

i haven't put dd-WRT on mine b/c i have no idea if it's compatible with the GS series and I'm too lazy to look.

got it fixed. apparently the dumb ass neighbors beside us got a wireless router yesterday and set it up to run on the same channel as ours(ch6) and it was fuckin up both of our wireless networks so I just changed ours to channel 8 and now both houses' wireless works. Thanks for the help anyways.

IIRC, you should really choose 1, 6, or 11, because they're the least busy of the channels...for example, i think (and i could be wrong) that some microwaves will interfere with channel 7

^^^ i'd go with 6, but ^ is valid, too...i just recall reading about how channels 1/6/11 were the most available for wireless networks because of other more common devices that interfered on the other channels

but you can choose any that you want, and if you don't have problems, then it's no big deal
